Design & Development of IoT enabled


Smart Outlets
i. Introduction:
Every house consists of different electrical appliances that are connected to the power board for desired
output. Power consumption is growing exponentially by the increase in the number of electric home
appliances having different power ratings. Now-a-days the power requirements frequently vary as the
electric devices can be connected or removed from a system by just a plug and it became very easy to
Plug and Play the device and the complete power consumption of the house is changed. This Plug and
Play can be done by an ordinary person having nearly zero knowledge of power system. This Plug and
Play option allow any person to easily install and operate the device. By this plug and play option, the
device connected is added to the network of the complete controlling system and can be monitored and
controlled easily. The electric devices with conventional power supplying systems cannot be operated by
this system. However, they can be controlled and monitored by connecting them with the home-
controlled power network.

There are two major parts of this system:

 Hardware :
- Includes mechanical and electrical designing.

 Software :
- Includes programming of NodeMCU.

ii. Objective:
Now-a-days world is facing energy crisis and this project is about smart outlets which will reduce the
excessive use of electricity. It is the most emerging technology and innovation in the modern world for
the reduction of electricity usage to save power. So our main objective for choosing this project is to
make a solution to control things from anywhere in the world wirelessly via internet.

Goals:
 Smart outlet will be controllable from anywhere.
 On/off controlling.

 Smart Socket will be controlling the connected device according to the instructions
provided by the Master device.

iv. Project Plan:


1.1 Proposed Design Methodology
The purpose of Smart Socket is to monitoring the use of power by the connected device and to control
the switching of the device according to the instructions of the Master device. The design of Smart
Socket is done according to its purpose. Mainly Smart Socket consists of following parts.

 Power
 Monitoring
 Switching
 Data Sharing
This project is divided into two parts in which whole system will designed according to the requirements
are listed below:

 Smart Hub
 Smart Socket

v. Application:
There are various appliances installed in a house. These appliances consume power according to their
rating. According to the power consumption, electrical power distribution companies charge the
consumer. The billing by the distribution companies are increased in peak hours of the day. If the
appliances are powered in peak hours, the billing is increased. Smart Socket is a product that schedules
the connected device according to peak and off-peak hours and monitors the consumption of power by
the connected device.
