Amorsolo. Compare the artists’ styles and techniques as observed from the chosen
paintings. Provide specific details derived from your observation.

OBSERVATION:
The masterpieces similarly portrayed a woman however of different essences:
 “The Parisian Life” – also recognized as Interior d’Un Café or "Inside a Café”. An oil on
canvas painted by a well-known Filipino painter and revolutionary activist, Juan Luna. The
Parisian Life was one of his masterpieces made when he lived in Paris, France. The Parisian Life
inferred a fairly tranquil aura which contrasted his other works. It illustrated a woman (courtesan)
inside a café in Paris representing ‘fallen womanhood’, who was on the verge of standing from
the sofa. The woman was dressed in floral white and pink which symbolized the purity of the
Philippines, her redolent position, however portrayed the cruelty of the colonizers. The dark
turtleneck was assumed to be a rope which hindered the woman up; it symbolized the absence of
liberty and independence of the state. It is interesting how small details it seems; however, it
conveys deep connotations. Juan Luna was certainly a talented artist who consider the smallest
detail in his work and had the power to communicate a story amidst his works.

 “The Washing Scene” – is a painting of Fernando Amorsolo. A sense of sweetness and optimism
were illustrated in the painting. It showed the vibrant tropical sunlight of the Philippines. As
observed, figures are drawn against a characteristic glow and the light emphasizes the details.
Also, a Filipina beauty was portrayed with the skin complexion of a woman – a typical Malayan,
clear and fresh skin. Fernando Amorsolo used a natural light and utilized a backlighting
mechanism known as Chiaroscuro. Fernando Amorsolo certainly shaped the persona of the
idyllic Filipina.

 No matter how positive it may appear, when it is Juan Luna, a dark impression can always be felt,
perhaps the dark theme he utilized; whereas with Fernando Amorsolo, the lighter shade he
utilized brought a positive ambiance throughout his work.
