PERSONAL STATEMENT
___ Fellowship
I am seeking an administrative fellowship because I want to become a leader
in the healthcare industry. I know that leading an organization or even a
department requires a good understanding of its inner workings as well as a strong
technical skillset. I think an administrative fellowship is the right place to begin
building that foundation. I am looking for a fellowship at an organization that will
help me learn and, upon my delivering satisfactory work, provide a career-
development path for me moving forward.
I am interested in your fellowship, specifically, because ORG is a premier
brand in the healthcare field. I know that if I want to become an excellent leader, I
have to learn from an organization that is committed to being the best in its field.
Your fellowship’s particular focus on _____ makes it a great fit for my career goals.
Your fellowship provides the perfect opportunity to see an organization from
multiple angles and to learn about it from different perspectives. As one of the best
_____ in the country, it stands to reason that _____ will be one of the best places to
learn.
Career Goals
My long-term goal is to become an executive at a healthcare system. In
order to get to that point in my career, I need to continue to build my practical
experience and industry knowledge. I am fascinated by healthcare and passionate
about making it better for future generations. I want my career to positively impact
patients, the industry as a whole. I am particularly focused on being able to help
provide financially sustainable, improved access to individuals through innovation,
patient-centric practices, and the efficient provision of care.
After a number of conversations with leaders in the healthcare field, I have
learned that the path to success is long and winding and often not remotely what
we might have expected. So, for my shorter-term goals, I am decidedly less
specific. I do, however, want to ensure that my career choices create a solid
foundation for me to join the ranks of executive leadership. I would also like to
work at a corporate, system-level in the foreseeable future.
I would like to work for an organization whose mission and values I can
champion as I continue in my career. I am looking for an organization I can stay
with long-term so I can really understand how it works and help it improve. I strive
to be a positive influence on others who approaches even the most challenging
tasks with a can-do attitude, and I would like to work with like-minded people.
In the more immediate future I would love my fellowship experience to
provide me with opportunities to: work as a member of a team; see how executive
leadership makes high-level decisions and sets a strategy for a health system and
each of its lines of business; work on effectively operationalizing strategic plans;
learn how to work closely with clinical staff to improve both the efficiency and
quality of care; use the analytical framework for problem-solving that my time in
law school has given me to improve patient and clinician experience; see a project
through from start to finish; and receive frequent, honest feedback so I can
improve and deliver highest quality work possible.
I have put in a great deal of effort to get where I am today by taking 20-21
credit hours per semester while working in order to graduate early from law school
with a certificate in healthcare law from the best program in the country and my
master’s degree in health administration. I took summer classes while working full
time and I maintained good grades. I kept an active status in extra-curricular
organizations, volunteered, and maintained familiar friendships while building new
ones.
I am accustomed to hard work. I am passionate about this field and I will
absolutely do what I can to understand it and to improve my skillset in order to
become a leader in this industry. I understand what it means to deliver timely
results under a great deal of pressure. I am committed to the healthcare field and
committed to becoming a leader in it. I would be honored by an opportunity to
demonstrate that I can be an asset to your organization and a reliable, positive
member of your team.
