1. Select one afterlife myth from the Leeming text, and discuss any
significant links to the apocalyptic myths from Unit 2. What is the relationship
between the two? Why is this relationship important? Explain.
2. Select a contemporary example of either a mountain or a global city, and
discuss the particular mythology associated with it. How and why do these
associations matter? What is their significance? Explain.
3. Summarize the primary argument of the Richardson and Weatherby article
“Belief in an Afterlife as Symbolic Sanction.” How persuasive is the analysis? Cite
at least one strength and one weakness in the argument.
4. Summarize the primary argument of the Flynn and Kunkel article
“Deprivation, Compensation, and Conceptions of an Afterlife.” How persuasive is
the analysis? Cite at least one strength and one weakness in the argument.
5. How does the Black Mirror episode “San Junipero” expand the conception of
the afterlife? For this speculative future, how and why does technology begin to
serve the faith-based hopes previously reserved for religion? Explain.
