responsibility.
SS.K.12 Identify diverse cultural events, holidays, and symbols and where appropriate, identify

Materials:
Everybody Cooks Rice by Norah Dooley
Families Can Live in… Families like to… Families Eat… laminated chart
Dry erase markers
House book to reference to during the chart.
Sesame Street Family Song : https://youtu.be/ii_LtHrEiao
Procedure:
1. Intro: Reflect on prior learning about families (refer to KWL chart). Ask 2-4 students what
they have learned thus far in this unit.
2. Student teacher will play a family song (link above)
3. Ask student’s “How many of you guys have ever baked bread, or eaten bread with your
family? Today we are going to read a very special book about bread” and transition into
reading “Everybody Cooks Rice”.
4. CW(Children Will) fill in the Families can live in… Families like to...Families Eat...Chart
together 1 heading at a time. After discussing each heading, the students will
draw/label what they learned in their Family Research Book page 3.
5. Give students time to draw one or two pictures in their box.
6. Walk around and monitor students, giving guidance and encouragement
7. Continue with each heading (there are 3)
8. During the “Families can live”, refer to the book from Mrs. Cooke about different places
that families can live (trailers, tents, homes, apartments) for accurate representation of
where families live.
9. After all three sections are filled out, CW add any new learnings about families to the L
column of the KWL chart from Monday.
Closure: SW share what they drew in their book with a partner (social).
Assessment:
Observation of student participation, assessing their understanding by observing accuracy of
picture and placement in each box.
Suggested modifications and extensions:
Depending on age and ability of children, students could be challenged to fill in each box with
pictures that I have not drawn. For example, if I draw a tent, they would have to think of another
place where families live that is not a tent. More advanced students could also be challenged to
label each picture that they draw by themselves. For students who have physical restrictions in
regards to fine motor and drawing, pictures could be given that they would need to match to
each section (i.e. apple in the families eat section, house in the families live section, and a
soccer ball in the families like to section).
