The Philippines men's national basketball team (Gilas) lost to Tunisia 67-86 at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, remaining winless with a 0-4 record. The event brings together basketball teams from around the world, uniting countries through one of the most popular sports. While it creates opportunities for players and increases basketball standards internationally, Gilas' losses have resulted in internal conflicts over blame and exposed the Philippines as an underperforming team on the world stage.

Gilas loses to Tunisia, remains winless in FIBA World Cup

The following current event is classified under social globalization because of the
implications of the relationships garnered from the coming together of many countries for one
event. It has created a culture among various countries that is united, and not barred within the
borders of each respective country. The FIBA Basketball World Cup is one of the largest
international basketball sporting events in history, hosting the eighteenth tournament from
August 31 to September 15, 2019. It is the opportunity to unite the world through one of the
most beloved sports in the world, basketball. Our very own Gilas has qualified for the
prestigious event, but have remained winless with a record of 0-4. The Philippines has dropped
its most recent game to Tunisia with a score of 67-86.
Three Positive Effects:
- Uniting the Filipinos’ love for basketball
- Creating opportunities for those who love the sport to compete on an international
level, especially our young basketball players.
- Increasing the standard for professional basketball prowess to compete on an
international scale.
Three Negative Effects:
- Internal conflicts, such as shifting blame for the underperformance of the team.
- Our obsession with basketball has not helped with getting positive results.
Furthermore, the abundant funding has not helped with getting positive results. This
results to underfunding in other sports where Filipinos excel.
- The Philippines is being exposed as an underperforming, and underwhelming team
with regards to international basketball play.
