Project Proposal ( Psychology)

Project Title: Sports and Media Psychology.

Introduction:

Sports psychology is the study of how psychology influences sports, athletic performance,
exercise, physical activity and vice versa. It  attends to the mental health and well-being of
athletes, as well as assisting them with reaching their maximum potential in their athletic
careers

Media psychology is branch of psychology that focuses on the relationships between media
and human behavior. This applies to individuals and society as a whole. Media psychology is
not limited to mass media or media content. The goal of media psychologists is to try to
answer those questions by combining an understanding of human behavior, cognition, and
emotions with an equal understanding of media technologies.

Background:

Griffith (1893-1966) is credited as the founder of sport psychology.

He started studying sport psychology as a graduate student in 1918. His research then focused
on how vision and attention predicted basketball and football performance (Benjamin &
Baker, 2004). A few years later, he was teaching a course specifically on “Psychology and
Athletics.” He also was appointed assistant professor at the University of Illinois.
In 1925, he opened the first-ever research lab on athletic performance at the university. There,
he conducted lots of research in sport psychology,

The history of media psychology actually began back in the 1950's, when television was
becoming popular. However, psychologists were more focused on children and television
viewing at the time. Research began to be conducted to determine how television viewing
affected a child's reading skills. Later, researchers also began to study if children watching
violent television were more likely to imitate violence or exhibit anti-social behavior. The use
of mass media during World War II, created a surge of academic interest in mass media
messaging and resulted in the creation of a new field, communication science (Lazarsfeld &
Merton, 2000).

 Many strategies and procedures are used to address problems

faced by athletes and other sports participants. Some of the
principal areas include:

1. Enhance performance. Various mental strategies, such as visualization, self-talk and

relaxation techniques, can help athletes overcome obstacles and achieve their full
potential.
2. Cope with the pressures of competition. Sport psychologists can help athletes at all
levels deal with pressure from parents, coaches or even their own expectations.
3. Cope with the pressures of Media. Sport psychologists can help athletes at all levels
deal with pressure from media persons and people on social media.
4. Recover from injuries. After an injury, athletes may need help tolerating pain,
adhering to their physical therapy regimens or adjusting to being sidelined.
5. Keep up an exercise program. Even those who want to exercise regularly may find
themselves unable to fulfill their goal. Sport psychologists can help these individuals
increase their motivation and tackle any related concerns.
6. Enjoy sports. Sports organizations for young people may hire a sport psychologist to
educate coaches about how to help kids enjoy sports and how to promote healthy self-
esteem in participants.

Project Objectives:
(What is intended to achieve by this project?

 The Aim of the project is to know that how a sports person manage to handle different

should react in different situations and how to keep their selves motivated, confident
and stress free through our final video which will be based on ted talks of different
psychologists.

Project Description:
 What will be done?

We will critically listen and analyze the different ted talks on sports psychology and
will find out the answers of the interview questions and we will take some interviews
of the young athletes through email or video call and we will compare both the things
in order to conclude our research.

 How it will be done?

In order to complete our project firstly we are preparing our project proposal, once it
will be approved by our instructor then we will start working on it. Second thing which
we will do is that we will make interview questions and those questions will be
relevant and that will not hurt any individual and those questions will be asked from
our selected sports person individually by our whole group but before that we will get a
review on those question from our instructor if we need to amend anything in that.
Thirdly we will start looking for the ted talk of different sports psychologists and we
will try to find out the answers of those questions which we will ask from the sports
person in order to compare our answers and analyze the difference and this activity will
take approximately two weeks because we have to listen to different ted talks carefully
and critically analyze those ted talks in order to find out our answers. Next we critically
analyze the main points related to our research and exclude irrelevant to make our
report and video specific and relevant. The next target will be making of the Final
Report and the Final Video which we will display on the day of our final presentation
and lastly we will present our whole project on the last day and we hope that we will be
successful in accomplishing our project.

 What is the importance of your project?

The importance of this project is that we will get to know the psychology of different
sports person and how they manage in front of camera so that we can give guidance to
the young sports person that they should do to manage the situations and control their
emotions and how they can fully focus on their job without any psychological
distraction.

 How will it benefit the society?

It will benefit the society in a way that young athletes will be more focused on their
games and will be able to manage their psychological problem and will make our
society and nation proud by achieving the best in their fields.
We will tell them some important techniques through our final video which include:
1. How they can manage their time
2. How they can answer to the media person
3. How they can be more confident
4. How they can manage their time
5. How their can understand the psychology of the media person
6. How they can be motivated towards their jobs.

Project Deliverables:
(Outputs or Products that are “produced to in order to enable achievement of the objectives”)

After critically listening to the ted talks and interviews of young athletes, we will critically
analyze their answers and point out the difference in their answers and we will end up by
preparing a draft which will include the tips that every sports person should do in order to
manage their own psychology and to understand the psychology of the media person. This will
be our achievement that through our hard work our young athletes will be able to solve their
psychological issues.
