Lima, Capital City of Peru


Lima is the capital city of the Republic of Peru. It is located on the central coast of the country,
on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, forming an extensive and populated urban area known
as Metropolitan Lima. Lima is bordered by the coastal desert and extends over the valleys
of the rivers Chillón, Rímac and Lurín. According to the 2007 Peru census, Lima’s urban
agglomeration has more than 8.5 million inhabitants, 30% of the total Peruvian population,
which makes it the most populated city in the country.

Lima was founded on January 18th, 1535, by conqueror


Francisco Pizarro in an agricultural region known by the local
indigenous people as Lima. It was the capital of the Viceroyalty
of Peru and the largest and most important city of South
America during Spanish rule. After Peru’s Independence it
became the capital of the Republic.

In the present day, Lima is the political, cultural, financial and commercial center of the
country. Internationally, the city is the fifth most populated city in Latin America and is among
the thirty most crowded urban agglomerations in the world.

The city lies mainly within the province of Lima, and extends
partially to the west within the constitutional province of Callao.
That's where the maritime port and Jorge Chavez International
Airport are located.

The Enchanted Bull


Razuhuillca is a lagoon located about fifteen kilometers away from Huanta, in
Ayacucho Peru. It is surrounded by three other lagoons, but Razuhuillca is the
biggest of the four, making it the main lagoon in the area. Razuhuillca is on the
top of a mountain at the entrance of Huanta, near a dam that supplies water for
irrigation and drinking.

According to the Huantine tradition, deep inside this lagoon lives a big beautiful
black bull, with a golden chain. The bull is under the control of an old woman
with gray hair. It is said that many years ago, the bull managed to beat the old
lady and come up to the surface. Immediately, the waters of the lagoon broke
the dykes. They flooded the town and devastated its population, creating great
chaos. When the native people of the mountain realized what had happened,
they quickly tied the bull and submerged it again into the depths of the lagoon.
Since that day, people are afraid that the bull might escape from the lagoon
again one day and destroy the prosperous city of Huanta, once more.
