Historical Background
After the capture of Saipan in the Mariana Islands, the 4th Marine division landed on Tinian to capture the airfields
which could allowed US heavy bombers to operate directly above Japan. On the 24th of July 1944, two battalions of 24th 9 x5
Marines landed on the beach codenamed White 1 while three battalions of 25th Marines landed on White 2. The two
beaches, in the north of the island, were defended by Japanese units of the 50th Infantry Regiment under the
command of Colonel Ogata. These units were entrenched in bunkers or caves and protected by some minefields. The US
Marines, with the support of flame thrower tanks and naval artillery of the heavy cruiser "USS Louisville", succeeded to
establish a bridgehead and to capture the north airfield in the same day.
The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.
