‘The Promat Technical Manual now in your possession, has been compiled as a “handston” aid for
project, design, construction and maintenance engineers.
The Promat fittings featured i.e. WELDOFLANGE / NIPOFLANGE etc. are designed to eliminate
stress problems and reduce cost to industry.
Included in the manual you will find components as applied within engineering design and
fabrication of piping systems and pressure vessels, i.e. lightweight fittings, vent - drain spacers
extended weld neck flanges, pad flanges, bulkhead flanges, swept outlet, weld neck / slip-on / blind
flanges etc, which are within the capacity of Promat manufacture and supply (see index page iii).

PRODUCTION AND TESTING
Promat fittings have been developed by experienced
piping engineers using the latest computer-aided design
facilities. This combination of practical experience and
high technology has produced a range of fittings which

corrosion and fatigue induced stresses which occur in,
piping systems.
In addition, Promat fittings are easier to install than
conventional assemblies, and therefore save on

and standards governing all aspects of the fittings and their applicati

specifications regarding fitting type, branch size, run size, flange type and rating, branch schedule
and material type as detailed in the ordering information section.
The design and manufacture of Promat contoured bodied flanged branch fittings affords optimised
use of labour and equipment required for the fitting’s installation and avoids the need to employ
sp
equipment for alignment ete.

aligning on the run pipe thereby avoiding the
need for site adjustments (figure 1). Refer to

two holes square as standard.
When installing a Promat contoured bodied flanged branch fitting the fitting itself can be used to
determine the opening to be made in the run pipe. This is achieved by positioning the fitting on the
run pipe and marking around the fitting base. The fitting landing edge (figure 2) should then be
deducted and the opening in the run pipe can be made by burning or drilling as site procedures
and restrictions dictate.

LONGITUDINAL — TRANVERSE.
NOT
Every “Promat” fitting is shaped to fit the pipe and is self-aligning.
“Longitudinal Section”, wide base at crotch section distributes internal and external stresses.
Gradual changes of section eliminates stress concentrations. Cone shaped opening gives improved
flow conditions.
“Transverse Section”, note the blending of the welding end to the run pipe to avoid sudden change
in the intersection. The throat of the weld at this point is designated by the weld end bevel.
To prepare the fitting for welding the fitting is positioned over the hole cut in the run pipe and the
weld gap set, as dictated by the weld procedure being used. The fitting can then be mechanically
fixed in position by means of tack welds and the weld gap spacers removed.
Using a weld procedure approved for the application, the fittin;
is then fully welded out, Firstly
the root weld is formed followed by the deposition of weld metal forming the body of the weld
(filler weld). On completion of filler weld beads the weld is capped to achieve the desired weld
profile.
The profile of the weld should present a smooth transition between fitting and run pipe thereby
eliminating high stress points which are undesirable.
