LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
SAFE WORKING LOAD
Definitions
• Hoists & Lifts : Any lifting machine or
appliance having a platform or cage whose
direction of movement is restricted by a
guide or guides.
• Tackles:Fixed or movable used in
connection with raising or lowering of
persons or loads by using lifting machines
• : Lifting machines: Crane, winch, pulley
block, forklift
LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

• For Lifting Tackles, Section 29,

of factories Act, 1948
• Rule 64 of Maharashtra Factories
Rules
Main Requirements
• All parts of good construction, sound material &
adequate strength & free from defects.
• To be maintained properly.
• Examine by competent persons
• A) Before bringing into use for first time
• B) Once in period of 12 months.
• C) After it is altered,repaired,welded etc.
• Maintain records of each examination in a
register in Form.No.12

INSPECT BEFORE LIFTING
Safe Use of Chain Slings
• Keep chain free from twist & knots
• Lift from center of hook of chain avoid lifting
from the point.
• Distribute load evenly on all legs.
• Inspect chain. Elongation of chain is a sign of
overloading.
• Position hooks of multi legs sling facing outward
from the load.
• Do not leave suspended loads unattended.
• Take the load steadily and avoid shock loads.

CONTROLS
CAUSES
SYNTHETIC FIBRE ROPES
Benefits of Synthetic Fiber (Web) Slings
• 80% lighter than the steel ropes and chains.
• Lower weight.
• Lower injuries, fatigue and low back problems.
• Easier to handle.
• Safer as the slings gripped the load closely along the
contours of the load.
• No mess of grease or oil, as the polyester slings did not
require greasing.
• Required only visual inspection.
• Capacity colour coded.
• Longer life of the slings.
Drawbacks
• High initial cost as compared to wire ropes and chain.
• Polyester fiber slings get cut and can therefore
dangerous, if cut whilst lifting.
• No indication of overload and therefore the risk of
sudden failure.
• Higher elasticity of polyester compared to steel.
TESTING & EXAMINATION
CHAIN PULLEY BLOCKS
• CHAIN SHALL BE INSPECTED FOR WEAR,
CRACKS,FLATTENED SURFACE.
• SHOULD BE FREE FROM RUST, OIL, DIRT,
CHEMICALS
• MUST BE STORED IN DRY PLACE.
• TAKE FINGER CARE AS FINGER MAY BE
CAUGHT BETWEEN CHAINS & RINGS.
• IDENTIFICATION NO.MUST BE EMBOSSED
/ PRINTED ON BLOCK.
• FREE FROM MOISTURE
SHACKLES
SHACKLES / LIFTING EYE
• SHACKLES TO BE CHECKED FOR PROPER LOCKING.
• IF LOCKING PIN, IS USED AS ADDITIONAL SAFETY, IT
MUST BE USED.
• IF FLATTENED, REPLACE IT / CHECK IT FROM
COMPETENT PERSON.
• ALL ARE CERTIFIED FOR SWL & BY COMPETENT
PERSON.
• IF NON STANDARD, EXAMINE IT BY COMPETENT
PERSON, GET CERTIFICATE & USE.
• OBEY COLOR CODE OF INSPECTION CYCLE
• IF RELEVANT COLOR CODE IS NOT THERE, NEVER
USE IT.
• NEVER ASSUME IT.
Shackles Inspection
• Usage of Shackles::
• Use for intended purpose only.
• Apply load slowly
• Not to weld or heat shackles
• Inspection
• Check distortions like bends, opening, twists
• Cracks & corrosion
• Locking threads for damage,rusty
• Inspect for wear reduction of 5 % or greater in the
diameter of the pin or bow.
REMEMBER
• NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING.
• CONTACT SUPERVISOR IF IN DOUBT.
• NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE PROCEDURES.
• IF WORK GETTING UNSAFE, INFORM
SUPERVISOR & GET SOLUTION
• INSPECT TACKLES BEFORE USE.
• MAINTAIN RECORDS OF TACKLES
• TAKE CARE OF FINGERS WHEN USING
HOOKS, SLINGS & CHAINS.
