1 Family Engagement
4.6.1-Describe the advantages and importance of family or caregiver involvement
in learner development
Family engagement plays a major role in student and teacher lives, as well as
the parents. It is important for the students, parents, and teachers because it creates
communication between home and school. Family engagement is not something that
only benefits the student. It also benefits the family and teacher. It helps to create a
solid path of learning for the student.
The advantages of family engagement is beneficial to everyone. A family
benefits because they can help guide their child. They can help them with problems
they are having and congratulate them on success. It is a way for them to stay involved
without physically having to be at the school. A child benefits from having their parents
engaged in their learning because they can receive guidance from them. Students that
have their family involved with their schooling benefit by the reassurance to their self
confidence. A teacher also benefits because it puts everyone on the same page when
helping the child. It also gives the teachers an opportunity to better understand their
students' culture and ways of learning. It gives a chance for more people who care
about the child to become engaged in their learning. (evidence 2.1.1)
Schools can get families involved in many different ways. It is important to keep
parents informed at the district and school level. The district should keep the families
informed on big events. This can be done through email, newsletters, and the district
website. It is also important for the individual schools to keep the parents informed in
the same way as the district. The school can also keep parents informed by providing
information nights. The important thing about this line of communication is to keep it
simple, make it consistent, and easily accessible. A teacher should also communicate
with families. The sooner a teacher can build a relationship with families the better the
year will go for everyone. This means not waiting until there is a problem to open the
line of communication.
Teachers have various tools they can use for communication. On a class level
they can communicate about what the kids are learning. This can be done by sending
newsletters, emails, and pictures. They can also use apps like remind to communicate
reminders to parents such as picture day is tomorrow. A teacher can also communicate
on an individual level. Reaching out to just a few families a week to share something
good can make a huge impact. You can reach out by writing a note or sending an
email. This shows you care about the student and see the best in them.
