3 Community Demographics
2.2.13 Analyze the community’s shifting demographics, and recommend ways that
the educational system can respond
Olentangy Local School District:
The Olentangy District is constantly expanding with many developments and houses
being built everyday to accommate the growing population. The schools themselves are bursting
at the seam with 24 buildings district wide. (15 elementary, 5 middle and 4 high schools) With
dramatically increasing numbers the district has so plans to stop as they have put a levy on the
ballet to add 2 new elementary schools and 1 new middle school, with ideas to grow even still.
Olentangy is known state wide for their academics and are proud of the education they
provide their students. District wide they have an 86% proficient reading rate along with a 87%
proficient math rate. As graduation rates go, Olentangy has an overwhelming 98% graduation
rate with students going on to attend some of Ohio’s and the county’s most prestiges
Universities. (Evidence 2.3.1) Olentangy’s mission is “to facilitate maximum learning for every
student”. (Evidence 2.3.2)
When considering racial diversity, if you were to step foot into an Olentangy school you
would notice that the majority of students are white. With 20,977 students district wide, the
white population takes 75.2% of those students, with the next highest being 12.6% Asian.
(Evidence 2.3.3) However, the district is aware of this and during an annual One Community
Conference they made a point to discuss how to be more inclusive not just in the classroom, but
as a whole community. “The Olentangy School District believes in promoting an environment of
inclusive excellence for all of our students, staff members, and families”. (Evidence 2.3.4)
Columbus City Schools:
Columbus City Schools can be located in central Columbus Ohio with a large population
that continues to grow. With 50,219 students to account for, the district has expanded to 119
schools to accomodate for the large population. Even with their massive population, they make
an effort to communicate with their students, staff and community. “The mission of the
Department of Communications is to advance the reach and reputation of Columbus City
Schools by promoting the accomplishments of students, staff, schools, and the district, and
provide vital information to the public, using an array of internal and external communication
vehicles, in support of the mission and vision of Columbus City Schools”. (Evidence 2.3.5)
As a district they have a lower proficient rate of 35% reading and 32% math with a 78%
graduation rate. However those who do graduate attend many excelling Universities. (Evidence
2.3.6)
Unlike Olentangy, Columbus City Schools are overwhelmingly diverse and it can be
present when walking into any of their many schools. 54.3% of their population is
African-American with the next highest being 23% white. However with a population as diverse
and large as this one, they offer free or reduced lunch to 80.3% of their students. (Evidence
2.3.7)
Cedar Cliff Local School District:
Unlike Olentangy and Columbus City schools, Cedar Cliff has a very small population
within their school district. They have a student body of 604 students inside of one building
accommodating elementary, middle and high school students. “It is the mission of the Cedar
Cliff Local School District to: Provide students with the best well-rounded education that
teaches, challenges and develops the mind, body and character and prepares responsible
graduates who contribute within society”. (Evidence 2.3.8)
Within the academic world, Cedar Cliff holds a high 90% graduation rate with many of
their students going on to attend the local college and other prestiges Universities around the
state and country. Proficient wise, Cedar Cliff students 76% are proficient in reading and 77%
proficient in math. (Evidence 2.3.9)
