Reading Summary 9

Engaged pedagogy emphasizes teaching students as whole people by acknowledging their intellectual, spiritual, and physical selves. It is based on Paulo Freire's view that learning should go beyond memorization to promote critical thinking and reflection. The teacher's role is to co-investigate with students rather than act as an authority. Engaged pedagogy aims to empower students and encourage self-actualization through freedom of expression and experiential learning. It also facilitates the growth of teachers as educators and individuals.

Reading Summary 9- Engaged Pedagogy Alicia Srinivasagam

CMCL 507

Bell Hooks Engaged Pedagogy talks about the importance of involving intellectual and spiritual
growth in the learning process. Each student must be acknowledged as a whole person who is not
just thought, but also spirit and body. This view acknowledges each person’s complex
experiences and personality, which shapes the way they learn. This view emphasizes the union of
mind, body, and spirit, and provides learning experiences which encourage students to
experience self-actualization and personal growth as they learn. This takes learning beyond the
acquisition of knowledge and promotes the integration of experiences into one’s full realized
self.
This idea expressed in the article comes from the work of Paulo Freire. He brought forward
the idea that learning should move away from the ‘banking concept’ where students simply
internalize knowledge, and into the idea that students can learn from their education in deeper
ways through critical thinking and reflection. Freire believed that reorganization of the classroom
was essential to this process; teachers must be coinvestigators with students rather than authority
figures. This responsibility that all educators have to their students is emphasized in engaged
pedagogy and is connected to the idea of engaged Buddhism discussed by Thich Nhat Hanh.
This philosophy talks about the role of the teacher as a healer who is aware of the emotional
needs of all students. However, for teachers to act in this role they must become self-actualized
individuals themselves. Teachers must also be learning and growing as they educate others, in
order to best facilitate personal growth and self-actualization.
Ultimately, students want an education that provides meaningful knowledge and personal
development. Engaged pedagogy is designed to empower students and encourage expression.
Students are able to experience learning through freedom through critical thinking and self-
actualization which develops them as people. Professors can alter curriculum to facilitate this
type of learning in students. This classroom culture also allows teachers to grow themselves as
educators and as people. Through their own learning experiences and self-actualization, teachers
can share their own stories as an example of experiential learning. This encourages students to
self-reflect and encourages students to be open about their own experience.
This aspect of engaged pedagogy is integrated in my role as a peer mentor. My host course is
structured for experiential and collaborative learning in the lab, students are able to direct their
own learning and gain adaptive expertise through overcoming challenges. Having taken this
course before, I have had very similar learning experiences to the students I am mentoring. By
sharing my own learning experiences and how I have continued to use them after finishing the
course, I can facilitate similar self-reflection in the students and help them to grow into better
learners.
