EDUC 2220- Educational Technology Lesson Plan Template

“Creating Our Own Recipes”

Kia Peer
3rd Grade Level

Common Core Standards:

1. MEASUREMENT AND DATA: Solve problems involving money, measurement, and estimation of
intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects. 3.MD.1 Work with time and money.3.MD.2
Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams, kilograms,
and liters.
2. PHYSICAL SCIENCE (PS) Topic: Matter and Forms of Energy. Matter exists in different states,
each of which has different properties. The most common states of matter are solids, liquids, and gases.
Shape and compressibility are properties that can distinguish between the states of matter. One way to
change matter from one state to another is by heating or cooling.

Lesson Summary:

Children will plan, create, and execute their own recipe.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson will take around 4 hours in total, but times will vary day by day. I plan to split it up into five days
for about 30-60 minutes each day.

Commentary:

I plan to have a hands-on approach for this lesson as I will be providing supplies for them in the classroom to
experiment with. I anticipate the parent-involvement portion to be a challenge. I will get my students “hooked”
into the lesson by letting them have freedom and creativity to encourage their engagement.
Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:
First 10 minutes
Introduction Activity- Question of the Day/Discussion
“Has anyone ever followed a recipe?”
Children will discuss with peers/myself about a time that they followed a recipe.
10 minutes
Technology- Kahoot quiz/game (Pre-Assessment)
Children will participate in a game of Kahoot to test their knowledge on recipes.
15 minutes
Instruction- I will explain this week’s agenda and how we will be doing a project on our own recipe. I will
explain about our classroom Google Slides presentation that will take place on Friday. Each child is
responsible for creating their own slide on the classroom account that presents their recipe. Papers and emails
will go out to parents so they can help assist with log-in and recipe.
Day 2:
First 10 minutes
Introduction Activity- Question of the Day/Discussion
“What kind of recipe should I create?”
Children will discuss with peers/myself about what kind of recipe they should create.
20 minutes
Brainstorming/Rough Draft
Children will brainstorm and create a draft with ideas for their project. They should write down different things
they could make before choosing their final creation.
Day 3:
First 10 minutes
Introduction Activity- Question of the Day/Discussion
“What ingredients can I use to make (blank)?”
Children will discuss with their peers/myself about which ingredients will work best for their recipe.
20 minutes
Recipe Books
Children will read through recipe books and take note to what instructions might work for their chosen recipe.
5 minutes
Instruction- I will remind them about their upcoming homework on Google Slides.

Day 4:
First 10 minutes
Introduction Activity- Question of the Day/Discussion
“How can I make (blank)?”
Children will discuss with their peers/myself about how they will make their recipe.
40 minutes
Experiment
Children will have access to different materials such as food items, household items, different dishes, tools,
and a microwave (with teacher assistance). In this time, they will experiment with different items in order to
practice making their creation. Most of the children’s needed ingredients should be accommodated but if it is
not- they are free to make changes to their recipe or create a different one for fun.
Day 5:
First 10 minutes
Introduction Activity- Question of the Day/Discussion
“What challenges have you faced throughout making your recipe?”
Children will discuss with their peers/myself about the challenges they faced with their project.
10 minutes
Finishing up- I will assist those who are making the finishing touches on their Google Slide and those that did
not have the opportunity to do it at home.
40 minutes
Presentations (Technology*)- I will open our classroom Google Slide on the Smart Board and let children take
turns sharing their recipe with the class.

Pre-Assessment:

A Kahoot quiz/game will be played in the beginning of the lesson to know their basic knowledge about
recipes, measuring, time, etc.

Scoring Guidelines:
Scoring the Pre-Assessment Kahoot quiz/game will be used as an observation on file.

Post-Assessment:
The project will be something children can do to show me what they learned throughout the week. The
collective sum of observations, rough drafts, and their Google Slide will show for it.

Scoring Guidelines:
The project will be scored as Pass/Fail because it is based off their own creativity. I am looking for
signs of measurement, time, temperature, mixing ingredients, and instructions on their project. This is
supposed to be a fun project for them and if certain children are missing parts, we can review with them
afterward. If by chance a student missed all the criteria, I would allow them to redo it after we
reviewed/studied.

Differentiated Instructional Support


Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students:
I think it is important to always have a back-up plan for those with different learning styles. I will provide the
option of making a poster board instead of using Google Slides and I will also offer after-school tutoring on
certain days for those that need it.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material:
I could assign children a task to measure at least 5 things in a day to practice with math skills.

Children would benefit by watching this video and seeing a demonstration about mixing/measuring
ingredients.

Homework Options and Home Connections


I created a Classroom Google Slide for children to do at home with parents. Each child will add their own
recipe on their own slide, with the help of a parent. Also, a video I made for an at-home activity will also be
posted on my blog as another form of technology. The video is relevant to the recipe theme.

Interdisciplinary Connections
This project is mostly Measurement/Data and Physical Science but many of the tasks involving making a
recipe include basic Algebra, Temperature, and Chemistry.

For students Various food items such as bread, sauce, cheese, flour, eggs, sugar, salt, milk, water,
chocolate chips, frosting, crackers, sprinkles, pretzels, m&ms, marshmallows, fruit, etc.
Various household items such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, glue, borax, food
coloring, etc.
Various tools such as bowls, spoons, measuring cups, plates, etc.
Various technology such as having access to a laptop, phone, or iPad.

Instruction- synonym of ‘directions’
Temperature- measuring how cold/hot something is
Ingredient- something that is mixed to create something new
