Learning Disability
IDEA 2004 Definition: a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved
in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which disorder may manifest itself in
the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations.
Characteristics: Specific Accommodations:
Reading Difficulties Have auditory technology that reads the story
to the student as opposed to reading it
themselves
Math Underachievement Have a math tutor, modify math tests, have
math flashcards to take home and practice
Impulsivity Have a timeline (when they can do what, what
is coming next, what they should be doing
now); needs more time to process
Academically Performing Below Grade Level Extra time on tests / modified tests, set up
time with a tutor, hold extra office time for
them to ask questions
Poor Social Skills Have one-on-one discussions as opposed to
group / whole class
Intellectual Disability
IDEA 2004 Definition: significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning, existing
concurrently [at the same time] with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the
developmental period, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.
Characteristics: Specific Accommodations:
Selective Attention Frequent brain breaks to keep them engaged
during the lesson, relate lesson to something
they are interested in, have more activities
than talking to keep student engaged
Short-term Memory Give students materials to keep and take
home to review
Poor Social Skills Have a partner as opposed to talking in a
small group, try to avoid whole class
discussions
Difficulty Understanding New Information Relate what they are learning to something
they already know, offer extra tutoring time
for questions
Difficulty with Communication Skills The worksheet with questions will help
student communicate what they are supposed
to be talking about in pairs
Emotional Disturbance
IDEA 2004 Definition: a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a
long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational
performance.
Characteristics: Specific Accommodations:
Impulsiveness Have a timeline (when they can do what, what
is coming next, what they should be doing
now), reward them if they do not shout out /
answer the first thing that comes to mind
Aggression or self-injurious behavior Do no activities with potentially harmful
objects, keep good distance from other
students, diffuse situations as soon as
possible, have an area for them to calm down
Withdrawal Keep student involved by having activities,
ask frequent questions
Hyperactivity Have a fidget center / brain breaks to keep
them engaged during lesson
Depressed Mood Have a Google classroom and create a daily
survey asking how students are doing that day
(this is anonymous to them) - if something
dramatically changes in the students mood,
refer to support staff or guidance counselor
Physical Disability
IDEA 2004 Definition: a severe orthopedic impairment that adversely affects a child's
educational performance. The term includes impairments caused by congenital anomaly (e.g.
clubfoot, absence of some member, etc.), impairments cause by disease (e.g., poliomyelitis, bone
tuberculosis, etc.), and impairments from other causes (e.g., cerebral palsy, amputations and
fractures or burns that cause contractures).
Characteristics: Specific Accommodations:
Difficulty with Gross-Motor Skills When paired with another student, have the
partner come to them
Difficulty with Fine-Motor Skills Have technology in the classroom to help
them say what they are thinking
Paralysis During interviews, have partner come to
them, open floor in classroom for possible
wheelchair
Speech Language Difficulties Pair with student who is patient, give partners
enough time to share their readings
Poor Balance / Uncoordinated Movement Have partner come to them, sitting while
discussing
Visual Impairment
IDEA 2004 Definition: an impairment in vision that, even with correction, adversely affects a
child’s educational performance. The term includes both partial sight and blindness.
Characteristics: Specific Accommodations:
Sensitivity to Bright Light Nothing on the computer / not many overhead
lights
Poor Academic Performance Set aside time to help student understand,
have a teacher aid, or test accommodations
Short-term Memory Print larger notes to give them to reference in
the future
Clumsiness During interviewing, have partner come to
them / have an open floor space
Short Attention Span Frequent brain breaks between discussions /
readings
Autism
IDEA 2004 Definition: a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal
communication and social interaction, generally evident before age three, that adversely affects a
child's educational performance.
Characteristics: Specific Accommodations:
Communication Difficulties Instead of large group discussion at beginning
and/or end of class, start with small groups or
partners
Poor Social Interactions If he / she does not want a partner, they can
read both passages themselves
Limited Interest Connect lesson to something they are
interested in
Unaware of Others Emotions Have a “Think Before Speaking” chart so
they are not quick to say something offensive
Difficulty Processing More Than One Piece Instead of reading and interviewing, give
of Information student time at home to read - allows for extra
time for comprehension
