Melor Putih is a 23 year old girl who lives with her stepmother Mak Kundur and stepsister
Mawar Merah. Melor Putih, or Putih’s life has been a journey to deal with her complicated
and fierce stepmother and stepsister. This goes on for sometimes and in the end the family
finally learns how to live together in harmony. This play teaches patience, tolerance and
relationship among family.

SCENE 1 (HOME)

Narrator : Once upon a time, there lived a not very happy family. Pak Nangka have
two wives, Mak Labu; the first wife, and Mak Kundur; the second wife. Each
of them gives birth to one daughter.

Pak Nangka enters to CS and sit on the chair.

Pak Nangka : Mak Labu... Mak Kundur.. can both of you come here for a second..? [with
a soft and romantic voice]

Mak Kundur enters from UR, Mak Labu enters from UL.

Mak Kundur : [Rolling her eyes at Mak Labu] Yes dear...? What is it.. is there anything I
can help? You want me to give you a massage..? [With an annoyingly soft
voice]

Mak Labu : Bang... Is everything okay? [With soft and romantic voice]

Pak Nangka : [Hesitating] I got note from the chief this morning...he..... he want me to go
to Kalimantan with the rest of our village’s ex-soldier..

Mak Kundur : SO?

Pak Nangka : The chief wants us to bring along our wife to help with preparing foods for
everyone... So I was thinking which one of my wives that would want to
come with me... Mak Kundur do you... [not being able to finish his sentence]

Mak Kundur : Absolutely....NOT! You want me to go to Kalimantan and cook? COOK??..

Pak Nangka : Yes.. I know.. But you’re much younger than Mak Labu.. She’s not strong
enough to cook and walk around too much... [comforting Mak Kundur]

Mak Kundur : NO! I’m staying here.

Mak Labu : It’s okay Bang.. I’ll go with you.. I can still walk to the riverside to wash our
clothes.. I’ll be fine.. I’ll come with you.. okay? [Smiling at Pak Nangka]

Pak Nangka : Yang.. Are you sure about this? [Looking very worried]
Mak Labu : Yes Bang.. I’m sure.. Mak Kundur can take care of Putih and Merah...
Putih and Merah can help with the house chores.. [Talking very calm and
softly]

Mak Kundur : Yes! Yes! I’ll take good care of our beautiful Putih and Merah.. [Smiling
cynically]

Pak Nangka : Fine then... we’ll be going to Kalimantan two days from now.. and be back
after 2 weeks.. Labu, go and pack our stuff.. Make sure not to bring too
much clothes..

Mak Labu : Okay Bang... [Walks out to UL]

Pak Nangka : Kundur,... I want you to promise me to take good care of our daughters..
make sure they’re not fighting with each other..

Mak Kundur : Yes dear.. I will... there’s nothing to worry about..

Pak Nangka : Good.. now.. let’s go to sleep.. it’s late already..

Pak Nangka and Mak Kundur go out to UL

SCENE 2

Narrator : Two days later..

Pak Nangka, Mak Labu, Mak Kundur, Melor Putih and Mawar Merah enters from UL to DC.

Pak Nangka : We’ll be going now..[Looking at Mawar Merah] Merah.. Make sure you help
your sister with the house chores..[Looking at Melor Putih] Putih.. Take good
care of your health.. Don’t force yourself to work too hard... [Looking at Mak
Kundur] Kundur, take care of them.. Don’t let them get into fight..

Mawar Merah : Okay dad.. don’t worry.. I’ll help whenever Putih is doing her work...

Melor Putih : I will dad.. Take care of yourself.. Mak.. Don’t work too hard.. Make sure
you have enough rest there..okay? [Hugs Mak Labu, shake hands with Pak
Nangka]

Mak Kundur : Yeah.. Yeah.. don’t worry.. I’m really good in taking care of these two
ladies.. You can go now..

Mak Labu : Goodbye Putih.. I love you so much... [Hugs Melor Putih]

Pak Nangka : Okay.. Let’s go Labu.. [Waving goodbye]

Mak Kundur, Melor Putih and Mawar Merah go out to UL.

*Lights Off*

Narrator : Two weeks later.

Putih enters from UR to DR and sits on the chair.

Melor Putih : Mak and Dad will be back from Kalimantan today.. finally! It’s really hard
doing all the house chores alone..

Knocking sound. One villagers enters to CR

Villager : Good afternoon ma’am.. Is this Pak Nangka and Mak Labu’s house?
[Talking politely]

Melor Putih : Yes it is... [Puzzled]

Villager : May I see all of your family? [Hesitating]

Villager go to DC.
Melor Putih : err... o..kay..

Melor Putih go out to DR and come back with Mawar Merah and Mak Kundur from DR to
DC.

Mak Kundur : Yes? What do you want? [With an angry voice]

Villager : I’m afraid to tell your family that.... that.. Pak Nangka and Mak Labu has
passed away 2 days ago.. both of them were shot by a group of pirates from
Kalimantan... I’m really sorry to inform you this..[With a sad voice]

Mak Kundur falls down to Mawar Merah arm. Melor Putih kneels down in sadness.

Melor Putih : Are.. are you sure they saw my parents? Or.. or maybe they’ve mistaken
them for another person. [Holding back her tears]

Mak Kundur : WHY!!! NO!! This can’t be happening.... [Bawl in tear]

Mawar Merah : Dad.... my daddy.. [Crying really hard]

Villager : I’m really sorry for your lost... I must get going.. [Rushing out to UR]

Mak Kundur : It’s all your fault! [Pushing Putih to the gound] You’re the one who’s
supposed to replace your old father to Kalimantan! I will forever hate you!
[Slaps Putih’s face]

Mawar Merah looked shocked. Mak Kundur go out to UR, followed by Mawar Merah. Melor
Putih sits on the floor at DC while crying.

*Lights Off*

Bawang Putih go out to CR.

Narrator : Three days later, Melor Putih’s lives has changed.. She’s now the
housemaid..

Mak Kundur walks from UR to DR and sits on the chair.

Mak Kundur : [Sits for awhile then look at CS] Putih! Putih! Come here! [With an angry
face]

Melor Putih enters from UL.

Melor Putih : Yes Mak Kundur. [In a soft and shaky voice]

Mak Kundur : Do you have your eyes with you?! These clothes have been here since
morning! Why haven’t you washed it?! [Pointing at the laundry]

Melor Putih : I’m really sorry Mak Kundur, I was washing the dishes just now.

Mak Kundur : Too many excuses! You finish this laundry, or you won’t be eating for the
whole day! [Poking Putih’s forehead]

Melor Putih : Yes Mak Kundur. [Picks up the laundry on the floor]

Mak Kundur walk towards exit, UL.

SCENE 4 (BY THE RIVER)

Melor Putih enters from UR to CS.

Melor Putih singing while washes their laundry by the river. Then one of the shirts got washed
away by the river

Melor Putih : Oh no! Mak Kundur will be so mad if I lost her favourite sarong... I better run
and get that.

Narrator : Melor Putih walks around the riverside to find the clothes. Then, she met an
old woman.

Melor Putih walks around CR, DR, DC and stop at DL.

Old Lady enters from UL to DL when Melor Putih starts walking.

Melor Putih : Emmm.. Excuse me old lady... Have you seen any sarong washed away by
the river?

Old Lady : Yes..., I have it with me. I will give it to you, IF you help me collect some
firewood for me.

Melor Putih : [Thinking for awhile] Hmm.. Okay. I will help you.

Narrator : Melor Putih helped the old woman happily...

Melor Putih : [Happily finding some firewood]

Melor Putih walk around CR, DR, DC and stop at DL.

Melor Putih : There, I got a lot of firewood for you Old Lady.

Old Lady : Thank you pretty young lady. Here. [Handing over the shirt]

Melor Putih : Thank you very much Old Lady!

Old Lady : Since you have helped me, I have a gift for you. Choose one. [Showing two
sizes of pumpkins]
Melor Putih : [Whispering] [Hmm.. If I take the large pumpkin, we will not be able to finish
it. It will be a waste if the rats eat the rest of the pumpkin]. I will take the small
one. [Smiling to the old lady]

Melor Putih exits to UL.

SCENE 5 (HOME)

Melor Putih enters from UR to CS.

Melor Putih went home happily after getting a free pumpkin.

Mawar Merah and Mak Kundur already at CS

Mawar Merah : Putih! Where have you been?! Mak and I have been waiting for too long. I’m
hungry!

Mak Kundur : PUTIH!! I told you to wash the laundry, not toying around the village! [Poking
Melor Putih’s forehead]

Melor Putih : I’m sorry Mak Kundur. One of the shirts got washed away by the river. So I
went and get it. Then I saw this old woman.. [Not being able to finished her
sentence]

Mak Kundur : Do I look like I care? NO! Now where did you get that pumpkin? Did you
steal it?! [Fiercely taking the pumpkin from Putih’s hand]

Melor Putih : No Mak Kundur. An old lady gave it to me after I helped her with some
works. [Scared face]

Mak Kundur : What?! You wasted your time..., helping an old lady?! [Smashing the
pumpkin on to the floor]

Mawar Merah : [Surprised]

Melor Putih : No...! [With a sad face]

Mawar Merah : Gold....? GOLD!! Mak, gold [Shouting and jumping happily]

Mak Kundur : Gold! I am so lucky today! It’s all mine! (Collecting the gold)

Melor Putih : But... Mak Kundur, I am the one the old lady gave that pumpkin to. So that
gold belongs to me. [In a soft and shaky voice]
Mak Kundur : What? You?! You have done nothing right today. You don’t deserve these
gold. [Laughing hard]

Mawar Merah : Yeah! Beside, these gold won’t fit your ugly shirt. [Pushing away Putih]

Mak Kundur and Mawar Merah exit to UL

Mawar Merah stays at CS for a bit and then exit to UL.

SCENE 6 (HOME)

Mak Kundur and Mawar Merah already at DC

Mak Kundur and Mawar Merah in their room. Mak Kundur

Mak Kundur : Hey Merah.... Wake up! [Whispering]

Mawar Merah : What’s going on Mak? It’s 11 o’clock. It’s too early.

Mak Kundur : You lazy pants. Get up! [Pulling Mawar Merah’s hand] Here.., take this
laundry and go by the river. [Holding a basket of laudry]

Mawar Merah : Mak....? Are you..... serious? You want me to wash these dirty clothes?
ME?? Eww.. no.....!

Mak Kundur : Listen to me first... Take these clothes to the river and throw away one of my
shirt. Maybe.... you will meet the old lady again. But this time, if she made you
choose, take the large pumpkin. I bet there are tons of money and gold inside
it. [Whispering excitedly]

Mawar Merah : Mak! You.. are.. so.. genius! Okay Okay. I will get ready. [Get up from bed]

Mak Kundur : [Whispering] Shhhhh! Don’t let Putih see you..

Mawar Merah : Okay! [Whispering]

 SCENE 7(BY THE RIVER)

Mawar Merah enters from UR to CS.

Mawar Merah pretends to wash the clothes and purposely let one of the shirt got washed
away by the river.

Mawar Merah : Opppsss.. My bad.. I better get that shirt.. [Get up and pretending to search
for the clothes]

Mawar Merah walk around CR, DR, DC and stop at DL.

Narrator : As expected, Mawar Merah met the old lady. Just like what happened to
Melor Putih, the old lady asked Mawar Merah for some help.

Mawar Merah : Hmm.. (Looks cunning) Do you happen to see any sarong?

Old Lady : Yes, I have.. I will give it to you, IF you help me to collect some firewood.

Mawar Merah : [Talking to herself while picking up firewood for the old lady [It’s okay
Merah.. It’s okay. As soon as you finish this nonsense job, you will get as
many jewels as you want.] So! I’ve finished my job...

Old Lady : Well thank you very much young lady... here.. the shirt that you lost.
[Handing over the shirt]

Mawar Merah : Ahhemmm.. Ermm.. Aren’t you giving me some sort of... well... reward...? I
don’t know... a pumpkin maybe...?

Old Lady : Ohh... yes yes yes... here.. choose one.. [Holding two sizes of pumpkins]

Mawar Merah : Who on earth would want to choose a small pumpkin..? [Bragging while
taking the large pumpkin fiercely]

Old Lady : [Startled] ooohh..?

Mawar Merah : Well.. Thank you very much old lady Laugh]

Mawar Merah exits to UL.

SCENE 8 (HOME)

Mawar Merah enters from UR to CS. Mak Kundur already at CS.

Mawar Merah runs towards Mak Kundur.

Mawar Merah : [Exhausted] Mak! Mak!... [Take a deep breath] haaaa.... Look what I got!
[Excitedly showing the pumpkin on her hand]

Mak Kundur : [Looking very surprised and excited] Merah! I can’t believe you actually did
it! [Hugging Merah]

Mawar Merah : Mak! Never underestimate the power of a lazy woman. (Proud face)

Mak Kundur : Quick! Let’s smash this pumpkin and take all the gold inside! [Taking the
pumpkin from Merah’s hand]

Melor Putih enters from UR to CS.

Melor Putih : Mak Kundur, Mawar Merah.. Is everything o... [Surprised to see the
pumpkin] err.. Where did you get that pumpkin, Merah?

Mawar Merah : [With a proud and annoying face]. The old lady gave me after I helped her
with some chores... Why? You think she only wanted to give it to you?!

Mak Kundur : Merah.. Merah! Enough. [Looking at Putih] You. Why do you bother so much
about the pumpkin? It’s your loss that you chose the small pumpkin.
[Laughing at Putih’s face]. Merah.. It’s time to say Hello to our sweet gold
inside this fat pumpkin.

Mak Kundur and Mawar Merah looking at each other’s face with excitement.

Melor Putih : But,.. Mak Kundur,.. Mawar Merah.. Are you sure you want to do th...

Mak Kundur smashed the pumpkin on the ground as hard as she can.

Mawar Merah : Ssss....snake! Mak!! It’s a snake! Putih! Help us!! [Looking very terrified]

Melor Putih : Oh No! Wait.. [Running to find something sharp]

Melor Putih found an axe

Melor Putih : Go away snake! [Hitting the snake]

Mawar Merah : Is it.... dead? [Shaky voice]

Mak Kundur sat down looking very surprised, putting her palm on her chest.

Mawar Merah : Mak....? Are you okay? [Carefully pulling up Mak Kundur] Mak! Speak to
me.. Are you okay?

Mak Kundur : Putih.. Putih..... [Runs towards Putih] You saved our lives... You saved our
lives....! [Crying while hugging Putih] How can I ever repay you? All I ever did
to you is..... nothing... ohh Putih!...

Melor Putih : It’s okay Mak Kundur... It’s okay.. I never hated you for treating me like a
servant.. [Smiling while comforting Mak Kundur]

Mawar Merah : Putih.... I’m really sorry too... Thank you for saving our lives.. I promise I’ll be
a good stepsister from now on.. [Holding Putih’s hand]

Mak Kundur : Merah... I think this is God’s ways of telling us that we’ve done a very bad
thing. We are really sorry Putih... Will you forgive us? [Holding Putih’s hand
with a sad face]

Melor Putih : Yes Mak Kundur,.. I forgive both of you.. Now let’s clean this mess.. I’ll cook
dinner for us.. [Smiling happily]

Narrator : Since that day on, Melor Putih, Mawar Merah and Mak Kundur lived in
peace and harmony. Melor Putih and Mawar Merah even make schedule for
everyday chores. The end.
