III. Listening to introduce modal verbs
III.1 do the listening exercise on page 99 20
IV. Modal verbs
IV. 1 Look at the following explanation on modal verbs to express certainty and
possibility.

Los Modal Verbs (Must, Might, May, Can, Could, Should, Will) se pueden utilizar para hacer
suposiciones a cerca de una situación no muy clara. Por ejemplo: imaginemos la situación
hipotética en la que varios alumnos se han conectado a su clase online excepto uno; de pura
casualidad ese estudiante se llama Itamar. Entonces se da esta conversación entre los siguientes
personajes, también hipotéticos.

Teacher: Where is Ismael? Why hasn’t he connected?

Fátima: He should connect in a minute (Fátima está casi segura de que Ismael se va a conectar
porque es su obligación hacerlo)

Betty: He may be having problems with his computer (Betty sólo supone que esa es la razón por
la que Ismael no se ha conectado).

Brisa: Or he could be at work (Brisa sólo supone que esa es la razón).

Esveydi: He might connect a bit later (Esveydi sólo supone que Ismael se va a conectar
después).

Reyna: He can’t connect because he only has a mobile phone, he doesn’t have a computer.
(Reyna está muy segura de la razón por la que Ismael no se ha conectado).

Mauricio: He must not feel well (Mauricio está muy seguro de la razón por la que Ismael no se
ha conectado)

Miguel: He will not connect becuase he has a terrible hangover (Miguel está totalmente seguro
de la razón; sabe que ayer Ismael fue a una fiesta con sus amigos y hubo mucho pisto, e Ismael
le comentó que muy probablemente no se conectaría hoy a la clase, por lo que tiene un muy
alto grado de seguridad en lo que dice).

IV.2 Now put the verbs from the box in their corresponding place in the following table:

Supposition (three verbs)

May / Must / Might / Will / Can / Could / Should

Some degree
of
certainty MAY

High degree of certainty CAN

Very High degree of MUST

Certainty
Almost completely sure of
certainty WILL

IV.3 Complete these sentences using an adequate modal verb to express certainty

1. Andrea is not at home she _______MAY_______ possibly be at school now.

2. Andrea ____CAN¨T_______ (not) be at school now because the school is closed.

3. Andrea __________WILL be at home in a minute, she just went to the shop to buy
some bread.

4. Carlos _________MUST______ have a lot of money, he just bought another beautiful

car.

5. He doesn’t have that much money, the cars _______MUST_______ be very cheap.
