As I begin my anime evaluations, I would like to discuss my all-time favorites first, while
also looking at some other anime that caught my eye. Some of these anime have been
around for decades but still hold their own in 2019. All of the anime listed in this blog are
available at Crunchyroll.com.

Dragonball Z and Dragonball Super are part of the same series made by Akira
Toriyama. This anime is by far my number one choice and the anime that got me
started in the first place. The main element of this anime uses martial arts and science
fiction to describe the use of “ki,” which is considered energy or plasma. If powering up
and lots of yelling intrigues you, then this is absolutely for you.

The setting takes place in multiple planets and universes around age 850-900 but has a
futuristic point of view such as flying cars and capsules that can expand into vehicles.
The main character, Goku, is a Saiyan that came to Earth after his planet gets
destroyed by Frieza, emperor of most galaxies at the time. Dragonball Z depicts new
enemies arising and Goku and his warriors having to train until they reach new levels to
stop them.
It’s almost like the series has plotlines for every major fight. The depth of the characters
introduced in each saga is so unique and fresh that the audience never gets bored.
Each adventure of the series has a different plotline. The battles do not get stale, either,
because there is always something new the animators can bring to the table. The main
antagonists include Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, Majin Buu, Beerus, and Jiren. Akira Toriyama
even went back to make movies about Frieza and Beerus, pulling in millions of dollars
from the growing audience.

A profound staple of this series is when it pulls the viewer in with its surreal
transformations. All of the Saiyans can transform into different levels of power known as
“Super Saiyan” (abbreviated by SSJ). The different levels past their base forms include
(in the order above) SSJ, SSJ2, SSJ3, SSJ God, and Super Saiyan Blue.

Not to mention that Akira Toriyama gets creative with all of the transformations. Goku
learns a technique called the Kaio-Ken, which is an energy multiplier, and he can use it
in combination with his Super Saiyan Transformations. The fact that imagination can
take us places like this is breath-taking. Who doesn’t want to power up when they’re
angry?

I love the cliffhangers that make me want to see the next week’s episode right away.
Everyone at my high school would be talking about what they saw and theorize about
what would happen next week! The anime even has a deeper meaning to it rather than
just yelling. Motivation from this series inspires people like me to go to the gym and train
to get stronger. If Goku can train and reach new heights, then why can’t we? Sure, we
can’t transform like him (yet), but what’s stopping us from getting in the gym and
pushing our limits?
A good anime always has a unique element of fantasy that ordinary people would think
impossible. It brings to life ideas and imagination that wouldn’t be possible without
creators like Akira Toriyama and other creators. Both Dragonball Z and Dragonball
Super are worth watching, even though together they are over 400 episodes long (not to
mention even better movies). Go out and watch just one episode and you’ll be there for
hours before you know it.
