Title: Transforming Shapes
Relevant SC Standards:
1. 8.GM.3 Investigate the properties of transformations (rotations, reflections, translations,
dilations) using a variety of tools (e.g., grid paper, reflective devices, graphing paper,
   dynamic software).
       a. Use coordinate geometry to describe the effect of transformations on two-dimensional
           figures.
2. 8.GM.4 Apply the properties of transformations (rotations, reflections, translations,
   dilations).
       a. Recognize that two-dimensional figures are only similar if a series of transformations
can be performed to map the pre-image to the image.
       b. Given two similar figures, describe the series of transformations that justifies this
           similarity.
Description: This app lesson will develop 8th grade students’ understanding of
transformations and allow them to develop the skills necessary to make their own
transformations.
Instructional Objective:
   • Students will be able to use their knowledge of transformations to construct their
       own shapes and transformations.
   • Students will be able to recognize and describe transformations.
Step 1 Content-Based or Skill-Based App: Students will use the Chrome app to
research different types of transformations on shapes. They will need to search rotation,
translation, reflection, and dilation.

Step 2 Content-Based or Skill-Based App: Students will download the Geogebra
Geometry app and make their own transformations and screenshot them. Every
screenshot must show both the original and the transformed shape. Must have at least 5
screenshots.

site&utm_source=Download%20page
Step 3 Creation-Based (Learning Artifact) or Skill-Based App (Screenshot of
Progress): Students will use the PowerPoint app to create a quiz for their classmates to
take. Students will paste their screenshots in the PowerPoint and have classmates guess
what type of transformation(s) they performed on the original shape to get to the new
one. Quiz “grade” will be turned in to the teacher for participation grade.
