High Commissioner: Covid Fiasco Violation OF Human Rights TO Migrants

The COVID-19 pandemic has created significant challenges for migrant workers. Police are beating migrants who are walking long distances home due to lockdowns, violating their human rights. Migrants are living in cramped and unsanitary conditions in detention by officials without adequate food, water, or shelter. Migrants also face barriers to accessing healthcare during the pandemic due to a lack of facilities and legal/financial issues. Their rights and livelihoods should not be compromised in the response to the public health crisis.

COVID-19 FIASCO: VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS TO MIGRANTS

Divyanshi
The century’s longest pandemic has created mayhem across the globe where one side people
are dying due to the virus while on the other side the cessation of life is seen due to hunger
and unemployment. The global lockdown has put forth pervasive challenges for hundreds of
thousands of migrant workers who are living their life in the unwieldiest manner. As said by
the high commissioner of human rights-“It is nonetheless important to ensure that measures
in response to the COVID-19 are neither applied in a discriminatory manner nor exacerbate
existing inequalities and vulnerabilities.” But these words are not implemented into actions.
A lot of places are seen where the Police officials are beating these migrants who are heading
back to their homes by walking hundred of miles, for breaking the rules of lockdown. They
are living in cramped and unsanitary conditions due to detentions by the officials, they are not
provided with basic human needs such as food, clean water and shelter. The ability to access
medical care services on humanitarian grounds is as usual compromised and exacerbated by
the crisis of medical facilities and lack of health care centres. They typically face the legal,
financial and administrative barriers put in front of them to afford health system. These
migrants workers are always the victim of the wrath of either societal system or the nature
itself. Due to global pandemic millions of migrants have lost their job and have no source to
fulfil their livelihoods. The rights of these vulnerable people should not be undermined and
compromised with the effectiveness of responses towards global pandemic. They must be
equally treated and given the same accessible opportunities of health care. They must be
included in national public health systems. Only then the fight against the virus will be
successful when humanity is served at its best.
