LAC Defination

A location area code (LAC) identifies different location areas that cellular networks divide regions into in order to locate mobile stations. The LAC is included in the location area identifier (LAI) along with another code to uniquely identify each location area. The LAC uses hexadecimal encoding in a range from 0001H to FFFEH with 0000H-FFFFH reserved. When a mobile station moves to a new location area, it notifies the network through a location update so the network knows the mobile station's current LAC for paging purposes. LAC allocation and encoding is generally set early in network construction and rarely changes during operation.

A location area code (LAC): To find the location of the MS, and each of the GSM PLMN to

cover the entire region is divided into a different location area. LAC is used to identify the
different location area.

LAI contains LAC, this is formed by two bytes. LAC using hexadecimal encoding. The
available range 0001H to FFFEH. The code 0000H-FFFFH can not use. A location area may
comprise one or a plurality of cells.

When the MS, or to turn the current cell of the LAC region was found to be different from its
originally stored content by the location update to notify the network of the current location
area, the MS and the network used for paging LAI. Allocation and encoding of the LAC is
generally provided in the early stages of the network construction, during operation, rarely
modified.
