It is frequently anthologized in American literature textbooks. The play begins as the county attorney, the sherrif, Mr. Hale, Mrs. Peters, and Mrs. Hale enter the Wright's empty farm house. On prompting from the county attorney, Mr. Hale recounts his visit to the house the previous day, when he found Mrs. Wright behaving strangely and found her husband upstairs with a rope around his neck, dead. Mr. Hale notes that, when he questioned her, Mrs, Wright claimed that she was fast asleep when someone strangled her husband. Often set in her native Midwest, these semi-autobiographical tales typically explore contemporary social issues, such as gender, ethics, and dissent, while featuring deep, sympathetic characters. In the early 21st century Glaspell is today recognized as a pioneering feminist writer and America’s first important modern female playwright. Her one-act play Trifles (1916) is, frequently cited as one of the greatest works of American theatre. In the original performance, Glaspell, played the role of Mrs. Hale. Plot The Exposition The Rising Actin The two man (Mr Hale and Mr Peters) try to find the clues that will link them to the murder of John. Wright, but they fail to do so. Instead, they hurl some kind of sexist comments to both of their respective wives (Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters). When both of the two woman felt offended, they took Minnie's side instead and finally came to term the depressing life she has with her husband. Questions! The setting How does the setting of place reflect Minnie's life? What kind of life does she have? The settings describe of a somewhat heavy life that Minnie has. And it perfectly captures the heavy and how trapping the relationship Minnie has, not to mention it perfectly captures the emotional and the atmosphere conditions of the characters. First, Trifles” started its setting until the ‘end of the play in the cold, bitter, lifeless winter. Third, the setting of the place in the farmhouse which Minnie lived in, seems very secluded. And in our interpretation this ‘add more tensions to the play. Second, the time setting in winter perfectly describes the tension between her and her husband all the way more.
