CHAPTER I
THE RESEARCH PROBLEM
Effects of Teenage Relationship on the Academic Performance of Senior High School
Students in AMA BATANGAS
INTRODUCTION
During the adolescence stage of adulthood, attraction to opposite gender occurs.
Teenagers become more interested and involved with opposite gender because of their desire to
be. As an outcome, romantic relationship gains value in teenage life. Teenagers tends to crave for
intimate relationship wherein love is given and received without boundaries.
Puppy love and childhood crushes turn to teenage dating activities for at least half of all
high school students with the onset of adolescence, teen spend less time with family and more
time with peers, in early teen years, mixed gender groups predominate. By mid-teens, up to two
thirds of high school students report they have dated or are in a romantic relationship. Having a
boyfriend or girlfriend in high school can have significant effects on teen-agers social
development and personal identity.
Teenage relationship has a huge impact to a teenager. Some high school students are
having a hard time in maintain good grades while being involved in this kind of romantic
relationship. Involvement in a serious or exclusive romantic relationship in the preteen / early
teen years can create problems. Youth spend most of their time thinking, talking, and engaging in
romantic relationships. Strong positive or negative emotions in youth are more commonly caused
by romantic relationships as opposed to other kinds of relationships such as with friends, parents,
or school staff (Furman & Shaffer, 2003). It is often believed that romantic relationships may
negatively affect youth’s academic outcomes because the time spent with a romantic partner
might distract one from schoolwork. Regarding such behavior of students on focusing more on
their love life they inclined on failing examinations, being late in class and losing comprehension
and retention on their studies.
A lot of students nowadays get involved to many kinds of relationship. Somehow,
students are getting careless on making decisions due to immaturity and lack of guidance. One
potential factor that has been largely overlooked thus far in the academic achievement literature
is the potential role of romantic relationships.
Learning all these aforementioned concepts, the researchers were motivated to conduct a
study to be able to determine the effects of teenage relationship on academic performance of
senior high school students, specifically in AMA Batangas. It explores the degree of importance
on how to handle such and to establish proper connection between students, thus this study will
help the students with romantic relationship to enhance their relationship and maintain their
academic grades.

performance of Senior High School Students in AMA BATANGAS. The input consists of the
profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, strand, GWA in AY 2017-2018 1 st Semester,
and GWA in AY 2017-2018 2nd Semester. Moreover, it also includes the respondents’ academic
performance according to motivation, time management in studying and time spent with partner.
Through the use of questionnaires, the researchers will conduct a survey as process of this study.
Lastly, the output of this study will be a seminar on establishing a real relationship goal.
The researchers will conduct the study among Grade 12 Senior High School students of
AMA Batangas. Another purpose of this study is to assess the association between
Belongingness Theory and Teenage relationship. According to Baumeister and Leary’s (1995)
belongingness theory, individuals have an evolved and robust need of closeness and social
belonging. Furthermore, the theory states that human beings have an almost universal need to
form and maintain at least some degree of interpersonal relationships with other humans.
Because of this, most high school students enter such relationship in order for them to
feel that sense of belonging, self respect and self acceptance and thus provide a positive climate
for learning. The mentioned theory supports this study as it exhibits the positive effects of
romantic relationships on the academic performance of teenagers.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Teenage Relationship on the Academic Performance of Senior High School in AMA Batangas.
Specifically, it sought answers for the following questions:

1.2 Gender
1.3 Strand
1.4 GWA in A.Y. 2017 – 2018 1st Semester
1.5 GWA in A.Y. 2017 – 2018 2nd Semester
2. How is the respondent’s academic performance affected by the following:
2.1 Motivation
2.2 Time Management in Studying
2.3 Time Spent with Partner
3. Are there significant differences on the respondent’s academic performance when
grouped according to their profile variables?
4. What action plan may be suggested to stop Teenage Relationship from being a distraction
on the academic performance of Senior High School in AMA Batangas.
HYPOTHESES OF THE STUDY
