CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
In our modern day we are already using technologies to make our life
easier. Wherever you go you can see someone using cellphones, laptops,
computers and other gadgets. We use gadgets or applications to be exact for
a reason, like for example using calculator on your cellphone, using e-mails
to send messages to other people through the internet, and so many more.
And to this day we often use applications Through these technologies that
helps us with our everyday life. With the help of these applications we can
easily create research, home works, presentation, etc. However, although
it’s easy to this kind of stuffs on this modern generation there are still people
who do not know how to use gadgets or how it works especially the
Microsoft word, power point and excel which is a useful application in work
and school.
If we observe most of the schools these days are now requiring doing
presentations through power point presentation, printed home works and
research, and excel to organize or calculate data. The problem is there are
still students who are not able to experience using them or only have basic
knowledge on how to use the application.
Microsoft PowerPoint has not been around all that long many of us
feel like we have always had PowerPoint because it seems universal, from
business and education to politics. Some amount of PowerPoint expertise is
becoming expected for anyone in academic practice and others involved in
teaching, at least in the modernized parts of the world.
The sheer popularity of this presentation tool comes from the belief
that representation of information using auditory and visual inputs improves
learning.
The same with Power Point is using Microsoft Word and Excel, knowing
how to use the tool Microsoft Word is an advantage in this Modern World Where
the Technology itself is Rising and It Helps in a many ways such as reports for
work and school and to take notes on conversations and in seminars and
classes.
And Microsoft Excel is a tool that is used to create grids of text,
numbers and formulas specifying calculations. That's extremely valuable for
many businesses, That Helps the Student on his Pursue. Excel also contains
fairly powerful programming capabilities for those who wish to use them that
can be used to develop relatively sophisticated financial and scientific
computation capabilities.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
General Objective
The reason why the researchers will gather to conduct this research is
because there are still Senior High school students who doesn’t know how to
use these applications. Conducting this research would help the researchers
to know what the level of their knowledge on these applications is and to
know the problems they encountered using these applications. And what
ideas would be the best so that these students may able to increase their
knowledge on using these applications that would help them especially on
their school works and might able to help them on their future jobs.
Specific Objectives
Identify what level of knowledge does senior high school students of
The National Teachers College have on using these applications.
Identify the problems encountered of the senior high school students
who is having trouble using these applications.
To help the senior high school students of The National Teachers
College who has no knowledge on using these applications
To increase the knowledge of senior high school students of The
National Teachers College on using these applications.
Statement of the Problem
This study is entitled “The Level of Knowledge and the Problem
Encountered of the Senior High school Students of The National Teachers
College in using MS word, PPT & Excel”, in response to this study the
researchers proposes to know several problems:
1. What is the level of knowledge of the Senior High school students in
using Microsoft:
1.1 Power Point
1.2 Word
1.3 Excel
2. What are the problems encountered by the Senior High school
students according to their level of knowledge in using Microsoft:
2.1 Power point
2.2 Word
2.3 Excel
3. How did the senior high school students encountered the problem in
using Microsoft:
3.1 Power Point
3.2 Word
3.3 Excel
Hypothesis
The hypotheses of the study entitled “The Level of Knowledge and the
Problem Encountered of the Senior High school Students of The National
Teachers College in using MS word, PPT & Excel” are as follows:
1. The Senior High School students of The National Teachers College level
of knowledge on using Microsoft Applications is identified and
measured and learns how to use it as well, also the problems
encountered of the students on using Microsoft Applications would be
solved.
H1: The Senior High School students of The National Teachers College
have a high level of knowledge on using Microsoft Applications and has no
problems encountered in using it.
Significance of the Study
The result of the study will benefit the following:
Students. The results will provide the students with some knowledge on
using Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel. And what problems of the
students in The National Teachers College encountered in using Microsoft
Word, Power Point, and Excel.
Teachers. The given data would guide the teachers on what to do with the
student who encountered problems in using Microsoft Word, Power Point,
and Excel. The teachers would be able to understand on why the students
encountered such problem and what are the solutions to this problem
Parents. Like the teachers the parents too will understand why their
children encounters such problems in using Microsoft Word, Power Point, and
Excel through the given data. The given data would help them formulate
some measures to help their children not to encounter such problems and
guide them through it. The findings would also help them
Scope & Limitation
This research study is descriptive and focused on senior high school
students in the National Teachers College. The research sample is composed
of (30) senior high school students in the National Teachers College. The
primary data gathering method used is survey-questionnaire to determine
the level of knowledge and problems encountered of senior high school
students in using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
This research study is interested on how senior high school students in
the National Teachers College learn the solution about the problem they
encountered.
The research study is limited only to the level of knowledge and
problems encountered of senior high school students using Microsoft Word,
PowerPoint, Excel in the National Teachers College of the school year 2018-
2019. Its limitations are those students from other schools or universities
who are encountering the same problem are outside of the scope of this
study.
Conceptual Framework
The Conceptual Framework clearly shows that the Level of Knowledge and
the Problem Encountered of the Senior High school Students using MS word,
PPT & Excel is far more difficult. In the 1990s, PowerPoint had become a
very popular teaching tool in academia (Murray, 2002). Learning PowerPoint
did not require major technical skills and familiarity with high-tech
technologies. Moreover, it allowed faculty to integrate multimedia
components easily such as graphics, sound, video, animations, and charts
into their presentations, which supposedly made the lessons more
interesting, engaging and structured (Susskind, 2005).
As a result, many teacher education faculty members began using
PowerPoint presentations in their teaching. One line of research that can
help us understand how effectively PowerPoint can be utilized in instruction
is cognitive science. Cognitive science deals with how the human mind
works: how people learn, how they remember, and solve problems
(Cooper,1998).

Technological Innovating Teaching
According to the Microsoft Office Corporation USA (2000). The
computer has many features that might be able to help and accommodate
people’s need in Education, Business, Researches and more the accessibility,
compactivity, and assistive use of the computer are vital for the fast
changing world. It helps people to communicate easily with family and
friends: Transact business: do their Homework, conduct researches. And
most especially, enhance education. The compatibility feature of a software-
based technology such as PowerPoint, MS Word, Excel can be used as
integral part of the education process to motivate the students to learn
through active participation in classroom discussion and eventually increase
their performance academically. It also assists the educators in their
teaching.
Jones (2001) cited in his article that to better explicit the rich potential
of technological instruction, the school must provide teachers the
opportunity to learn about technological advances with adequate training
and the time to develop the know-how of the teachers in incorporating
technology to instruction for a better learning.
Technology can help facilitate the knowledge-constructed classroom,
several researchers (Bork,1985; Papert, 1980; Ragosta, 1982, p43). In the
“laboratory for Comparative Human Cognition” of 1090, view that the
computer has influences effect on the teaching and learning process. They
stated that with the use of computer in the classroom, schools should be
able to shift teacher-centered into student-centered classified on how the
process would affect the Level and Performance on Learning the tools.
Despite all the merits of computer technology, a teacher must use it wisely
to ensure the effective learning and must give clear instructions and
guidance. As Bland says, “Technology should be used to expand the
possibilities for students.
Human Perception
Grambs, (1995) *Nouri and Shahid, et al. (2005) Stated that the
Microsoft PowerPoint presentation change the way of how people
communicate to others. PowerPoint instruction has the best feature that
accommodates the multi-learning abilities of children, as multimedia
presentations allow graphical simulations, mental imagery and associated
knowledge to process at the same time, Critics however, complain that
multimedia presentation is a weak tool for instruction because it lacks
creativity (Wineburg, 2003) causes a suppression of interactions, promotes
style over substance and creates a distraction of the real concepts that
needs to be transmitted, And yet a computer-aided instruction cannot be
effective in itself without proper use of its functions in channeling
information and transmission of knowledge (Allen,1997,Hobson,2002).
Students’ perceptions also have an important role in determining how
students view instructional materials (Entwistle, 1987; Entwistle et al.
2002). For instance,( Salomon 1984) showed that the way students
conceived of the instructional materials (working with television and printed
materials) influenced the cognitive effort they put in their learning task.
PowerPoint is everywhere these days. There are thousands of books,
websites and blogs entirely devoted to PowerPoint. Microsoft estimates that
at least 30 million PowerPoint presentations are made every day (Parker,
2001). What was life like before PowerPoint? Some would ask whether there
was indeed life before PowerPoint, while others (as we will see in a later
section) would question whether there is life after PowerPoint. The last
twenty-five years have seen PowerPoint become not just the world’s most
popular presentation software but also a mass cultural phenomenon
throughout the
modern world.
We can barely recall life without it. Nowadays PowerPoint is in court
rooms, daycare centers, and churches. It even appears at wedding
receptions and birthday parties. Attorneys use PowerPoint presentations for
their opening statements in criminal cases. In the case of State vs.
Sucharew, the Arizona Court of Appeals ruled that there was nothing
inherently illegal or unfair about a prosecutor using a PowerPoint
presentation in an opening statement, in which the prosecutor provided a
slide show of photographic exhibits (Fisher, 2003). PowerPoint presentations
are also used by daycare centers to market their childcare programs during
open house days. Recently, I attended an open house of a childcare
program, where program director gave parents detailed information about
their programs and registration requirements through a PowerPoint
presentation. Parents were especially impressed with pictures of happy
students engaged in activities such as playing in the playground or enjoying
the children's wading pool in the summer. The PowerPoint presentation
worked like magic. Almost everyone in the presentation room signed up their
child in the program after the presentation was over.
PowerPoint is also used as an entertainment tool. Nowadays at the
wedding receptions, as guests take their seats, people are treated to slide
shows of side-by-side baby pictures of bride and groom, or pictures with
friends and family along with explanatory text and a romantic music all
created by PowerPoint (Parker, 2001). PowerPoint conquered even America’s
churches. Twenty-first century clergy use modern presentation technology to
spread the old message.
Local Studies
Technological Innovating Teaching
In the study conducted by Mallari on the effectiveness of using CAI
materials on slow learners among third year students of Don Alejandro
Roces Sr. Vocational Highschool that the instructional material in multimedia
format in teaching reading and writing developed by Dapito, she found out in
her study that the students understands better and is interested to the text
they are reading if its accompanied by graphics, design, and colorful
illustrations.
(Saragon, 2001) Stated that the effective teaching to increase the
knowledge in using Microsoft tools, connects on teachers that must possess
adequate skill and knowledge in handling and operating software-bases
teaching method. According to Saragon, Microsoft Tools is useful for the
Students on Educational purposes that creates innovation that may be
fundamental on building knowledge. Technology perhaps contribute to
multimedia knowledge and reduces the capacity on students.
(Amoyo, 2010) cited that the tools system processes information
about non-verbal objects including images for shapes, pictures, models,
animation, color, and sound. It helps increase the attention and learning
ability of students especially in retrieving information and knowledge.
(Mira, 2004) also cited that an effective tool in presenting the complex
topic that need in critical thinking especially when you’re at capturing the
interest on students in the Powerpoint presentation. She also agreed that
the use of the Powerpoint presentation motivates the student’s to learn and
formulate the concepts that can be vital to technical advantage. Also the
Powerpoint instruction is highly acceptable to both teachers and selected
students.

Importance
Vijay Kumar made an article about importance of Microsoft Word in
education(http://www.klientsolutech.com/importance-of-ms-word-in-
education/). He stated that Microsoft Word is an important education
application or an essential in studying. Because Microsoft Word helps
Students and Teachers to create meaningful information. Also, he stated
that Microsoft Word serves as educational material and helps practice
systematically in schools to have higher quality of presenting information
like assignments, research and etc.
PowerPoint use was often fast and almost painless because PowerPoint
is very similar to other Microsoft Office applications such as MS Word, a word
processor many faculty use extensively in their profession. PowerPoint was
also like an expected panacea for improving instruction for many faculty
members. It allowed faculty to easily integrate multimedia components such
as graphics, sound, video, animations, and charts into their presentations,
which supposedly made the lessons more interesting, engaging and
structured PowerPoint also allowed faculty to print slides and handouts for
their students. Students enjoy the convenience of having PowerPoint
presentation notes as handouts
