CLASSROOM DESIGN 2

The design and set up of a classroom is essential to having a positive learning atmosphere

for all children to be able to feel comfortable in. The design of a classroom has the potential to

promote participation and provide an optimal learning space. Students should feel comfortable in

the classroom and be encouraged to learn in that environment. I am majoring in special education

with hopes to become an elementary school autism teacher with a self contained classroom. I

would like to have my classroom be a peaceful place that these children feel safe in.

My theme of my classroom would be a peaceful jungle. I think that having decorations of

animals such as sloths, birds, and frogs would elevate learning in my classroom. I would like to

have trees made out of paper on the walls along with as many fake plants as allowed at my

school. I think having lots of greenery can provide a relaxing environment along with providing

a stimulus in the students mind to make them more productive. I would want all the decorations

to be minimal and plain so they are not distracting. Another aspect I would really like to include

in my classroom is an essential oil diffuser. I think having this in a classroom with oils that

promote learning and focus would benefit my students. I also would like a small water fountain

or machine that gives off a calming noise for the students. I think having a peaceful, encouraging

environment for a classroom is the most important thing for the students.

When talking in terms of the set up of my classroom, I want to provide an organized area

that promotes a positive learning environment. I would prefer each student have their own

individual desk in order for them to have a safe place in the classroom. Their desk will be

individualized to them with their name and schedule on it. I think allowing children their own

space not only provides less stress but also allows for more development. I would want to have

my desk towards the back of the classroom in order to optimize the space in the classroom and

allow for an easy way for students to talk to me without feeling embarrassed in front of other

kids. I would also like to incorporate a reading area, calm down center, and a sensory area. I

think all of these would truly benefit special education students and are vital to a functioning

classroom. I provided a blueprint to outline how I would want my classroom set up.

Classroom design is vital to promote a positive learning environment and calmness in the

classroom. I hope that when I have a classroom of my own my students will feel as if the

classroom is comfortable and relaxing.
