Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)
How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.
This clinical rotation reinforced to me why I am pursuing this career. We were exposed to good and bad, right and wrong. Our
clinical instructor was consistent in reminding us that no matter what we see them do, we are to do the right thing. Integrity is a
huge part of being a nurse. I feel like it’s a lot of what you do when no one is looking. I want to be trustworthy, dependable and
possess a great set of skills. Witnessing some not so great care and practice reminded me that nurses who care and want to make a
difference are needed.
Which objective did you accomplish during this rotation? How did you do it?
Being a 4th term student, I was able to use this rotation to practice seeing the bigger picture. Collecting lab results, medication
regimens, and PMH in addition to report allows you to piece together what condition causes what symptom. Becoming more
familiar with what treatments are effective for what problems. I came in everyday, received my assignment, collected background
info from the computer system, identified my nurses (off going and on coming), introduced myself and received report before
providing care. A routine is important.
What are your goals for your next clinical rotation?
I am unsure of what kind of practicum I will be placed in. However, I plan to be able to be more independent as it is a one on one
instructor/student setting. I will apply my knowledge and experience to my practice during my practicum, take initiative and ask
questions. I will listen and learn to become better. There is always room for improvement. I strive for that. I am anxious to see how
it will go.
Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory. If an item was
identified as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along with goals to improve performance).
Great job over the past 5 weeks! I was able to see an improvement in your skills as the time went on. Keep working on routine
and how you want your flow to go. Always add in for the unexpected and remember you have the entire shift to get things done,
so prioritize. You will not get to everything on your lists everyday but that’s why communication is key with the oncoming shift and
those around you. Keep doing things correctly and strive for perfection but accept that we are all human. Have confidence in
yourself because you will do great. Good luck to you!
