Lateral Thinking Worksheet 1

Lateral thinking involves approaching problems in novel, unconventional ways rather than relying on typical assumptions. It focuses on creative, "out of the box" solutions rather than strict rule-based thinking. The document provides examples of using lateral thinking to address climate change by incentivizing personal tree planting or nature periods in schools. It also discusses using lateral thinking to save water by recharging groundwater or reusing washing water for plants, and making Madurai plastic-free by banning plastic while providing bio-plastic alternatives.

LATERAL THINKING – 1

SHRI KRISHNAA V N

Reflective questions

1. Lateral thinking in problem solving

Lateral thinking helps is to approach any problem without any

precustomed assumptions. So one can have their minds open to
various different approaches which are logical yet unconventional.

2. Lateral thinking and Vertical thinking

Vertical thinking is when one has an ideal, “rule book " type
approach to a given problem.

Lateral thinking is all about giving an ' out of the box ' solution which
is effective and does the job

Example:

Need an emergency omelette but no pan

Vertical thinker : Go out to buy it

Lateral thinker : Use the iron box

It is all about coming up with innovative ideas for the

problem.

Scenarios

1. Climate Change

Climate change is a real time problem which is going to determine

our availability of resources in near future
It is a slow change but due to humanity plundering of nature by
pollution we are causing self destruction Preventive methods should
be undertaken.

As Vertical Thinker

Mainly, direct and indirect causes of global warming should be

controlled.

Strict government policies is the first step .

Plastics must be banned and cheaper bio plastic alternatives should

be brought into usage.

Renewable energy research must be promoted.

As Lateral Thinker

Incentives such as reduction in tax may be provided for people who

reduce carbon footprint.

People can be encouraged to have their own personal trees as pets.

This personalization may increase tree plantation.

School children may be allotted compulsory nature period where

they implement nature related practices

2. To save water in our homes / colleges

All buildings are to be strictly held with rain water drains into the
ground

Tiles may be avoided wherever possible and mud ground can be left
as such for ground water recharge
Tap showers may be used. It spreads same volume of water over a
large area thereby finishing the hand - wash work faster.

Restraints may be used on taps to prevent leakage as it amounts to

major cause of unwanted water loss.

Can come up with a method to use washing water to water the

plants after sufficient treatment..

3. To make Madurai plastic free

Suitable bio alternative should be first created

Plastics should completely banned which is now prevalent

Campaigns should be made to make use of all resources of the NGOs

to dispose all the existing plastic.

All the corporation workers must be given strict information about

plastics and should be deployed to the field.

Incentives can be suitably provided to workers and students for their

involvement in the campaign.

The alternative bio plastic covers should be given free of cost to

people by the government.

These methods can be fruitful to make Madurai plastic free.

Report :

I learnt to apply lateral thinking to real world scenarios and to make

the best out of given resources for best results.
