Aim: To determine the flash point of given petroleum sample using Able’s apparatus.
Apparatus:
Flash Point Able’s apparatus
Thermometer: - 1. Able oil cup 2. Able water Bath
Match Box
Definition of Flash Point:
The lowest temperature at which material gives off enough vapor to form an explosive
mixture with air and when small flame is brought near the surface of liquid, then it gives
momentarily flash.
Significance and Use
Flash point values may be used in shipping, storage, handling and safety regulations, as a
classification property to define “flammable” and “combustible” materials.
A flash point value may indicate the presence of highly volatile material(s) in a relatively
non-volatile or nonflammable material.
Flash point measures the tendency of the specimen to form a flammable mixture with air
under controlled laboratory conditions. It is only one of a number of properties that shall
be considered in assessing the overall flammability hazard of a material.
Flash point is used in shipping and safety regulations to define flammable and
combustible materials.
Flash point can indicate the possible presence of highly volatile and flammable materials
in a relatively nonvolatile or nonflammable material.
This method is used for finding out the flash point upto 120º F
Procedure:
Clean and dry flash point cup.
Fill the sample in the cup and place the lid on the cup.
Fill the water in the bath .
Insert the thermometer and cool the sample below 10º C. Heat the water bath so that
the temperature of the sample is raised at the rate of 1 to 1.5 º C per minute.
Light the test flame and apply to the sample when the sample temperature reaches to
27 º C and after regular interval of 0.5 º C till the flash is reached.
Result: The flash point of given sample by Able’s method is = ----º C
