INTRODUCTION
Education is an aspect which involves the acquisition of knowledge and learning
of skills, Inculcate moral values, positive thinking and ethical values. Education give
us the knowledge of the world around us and transforms it into something better. When
we speak about education, most of the student will be experiencing the good or poor
performance. Good performance is described when students do things come together in
the right order and at the right time, like the ingredients and the steps of a recipe while
poor performance is legally defined as when the student behavior or performance might
fall below the required standard.
UITM is an institution that emphasize such objective whereas this institution
commits every effort to implement the best education level for their students in order
to create a better future. Lecturer as an educator is really emphasize the value of
education towards their student in UITM SHAH ALAM. From lecturer's point of view,
good or poor student's result reflect their performance for presenting knowledge. For
those student who score in examination and have good performance, they tend to
understand most of the lecture and really committed to study while for those student
who do not do well in examination and get poor performance, they are labelled as a
student who is not committed to their study.
In our study, we decide to focus only on poor academic performance because this
is the most crucial part of being a student. Academic performance data are easily to be
obtained and measured. Some tend to think that academic performance is either pass or
fail, but in definition, poor academic performance is when a student does not achieve
his or her standard desired performance in academic.
A study on poor academic performance (NORHAYATI AHMAD, 2010) “The data
over a period of ten semesters showed that students who graduated with Cumulative
Grade Point Average (CGPA) of more than 3.00 are averaged at 20%. Majority of the
students obtained CGPA between 2.50 to 2.90. Taking an average of student intake at
25 students per semester, the average percentage of graduating students per semester is
only about 50% per semester”
From this research we could observe that only half of the graduating students,
graduate every semester. There is another 50% who does not graduate and experienced
poor academic performance
The purpose of conducting this study is to perceive this situation by finding the
solution and there is a concern to investigate the factors of student poor performance.
Beside we are trying to identify any solution of poor academic performance among
UITM SHAH ALAM’s students.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
To cope with this hectic life, in this case the students of UiTM Shah Alam were
expected to excel in their education as it is one of the most important aspects of
human resource development. From an article entitled ‘The importance of Education’
written by Dr. Abdulghani Al-Shuaibi in 2014, he stresses the importance of
education by saying that it is the key to success in the future and to have many
opportunities in life. The fact that it has become one of the aspect that were assessed
in order to distinguish one person’s capability from the others has made students’ life
more challenging.
Every student should have their own opportunity in pursuing education and
achieving his or her best academic potential in life. However, despite having a strong
desire it has been a common in life that every person were born with a different
capability and sets of brain. The problem of poor performance among UiTM Shah
Alam student in academics has become a great barrier for the university from
achieving a better position in the worldwide university chart. As we all know, there
will always be some part of the student who were unable to excel in their academic
performance. The lack of awareness from the students in making changes to their
study routine and attitude added by the nescience of some parents and educators in
helping the student to excel in their studies has made this problem worsen.
Thus, the purpose of this report is to further study regarding the poor academic
performance among this UiTM students and as a result, expect to offer solutions that
could assist the students in improving their academic performance in the future while
indirectly helping the parents and lecturers in fostering their children or student
academic growth.
The research questions that are needed to conduct the research on poor academics
performance among UiTM Shah Alam students are as follows:
● What are the factors that caused the student’s poor academic performance?
● How to overcome poor academic performance among the students?
● Does poor academic performance relates with the student’s employ-ability in the
future?
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this study is to study and solve poor academic performance among
students in UiTM SHAH ALAM. This study suggests several research objectives to be
attained as follows:
i. To investigate the factors of students' poor academic performance.
ii. To identify any solution of poor academic performance.
iii. To study the relationship between poor academic performance and
employability.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The findings of the study were expected to be beneficial towards UiTM Shah Alam
students, especially to those with poor performance in academics. In this study, we
aimed to investigate the factors that were holding them students down from achieving
their best potential in academics and by doing so, it will eventually increase the student's
awareness regarding the factors that has caused their academic performance to be below
par.
Next, we also aimed to identify the solution which can help the students with poor
academic performance. This will help and guide them on how to improve their
academic performance such as making a better study schedule, changing the way of
learning thus increasing its effectiveness and opt for meeting the lecturers regularly if
there has been any questions or misunderstanding during the teaching and learning
session in class.
Besides that, this research was executed to educate the parents and lecturer in
helping their children and student. In the family institution aspect, this study will
educate the parents on how to support, encourage and give motivation towards their
child instead of applying tremendous pressure towards the children into studying and
eventually worsen the problem. Moreover, this will also help the lecturer in
communicating with and approaching their students who are having a lot of difficulty
in their study in the best possible way. For example, the lecturer could instigate more
focus and time towards the poor academic student after school time or having them
taking a counseling class with the institution's counsellor instead.
In creating a better future for the country and helping it to develop rapidly, it all
depends on the way that we handle things from the smallest ones. As the country looks
to draw its name in the global stage, education is a very important aspect to be taken
care of. In this study, we also study on how many students were denied from their
employee status as consequence of their poor academic performance. With this
research, it hopefully will help the students to be more success in their study and be
more enthusiastic in achieving their goals or future jobs. “There is no future without
education”.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION
This study will be involving the semester 4, UiTM Shah Alam undergraduates’
students based in Selangor. The survey that were created with the help of Google Form
will be distributed through Whatsapp or Telegram to about 50 respondents which are
teenagers with various range of age, education and family background. Due to the small
size sample, the result is not reliable for generalizing it to all students as they may come
from different university or education level. The study takes about 14 weeks to be
completed which starts from March 2020 until June 2020.
There are a few limitations during the whole time to complete this study. Firstly,
this study was conducted during the movement restriction order (MRO) which makes
the group members’ direct communication to be impossible. Thus, discussion will only
be conducted through online platform such as Whatsapp and Google Meet despite all
the problems faced such as poor internet connection and a huge amount of mobile data
consumption in doing so. The other limitation is since classes were conducted virtually,
it also may result in difficulty while discussing with the lecturer in order to get the
guidance and references for the study. Besides that, the method of face to face interview
between the informants and respondents has been made impossible by the MRO
imposed by the government in order to stop the spread of the currently rampant virus.
These limitations had forced the method of the study to only be carried out in
quantitative method such as the online survey besides referring to the data, statistics
and articles online.
PREVIOUS STUDY
The purpose of conducting this study is to perceive this situation and there is a
concern to investigate the factors of student’s poor performance. Beside we are trying
to identify any solution of poor academic performance to help the student to achieve
their full potential to get good performance especially in their study.
Based on local study, generally there are lot of factors that contribute to the poor
performance especially to the university student. But most of them are still confused
and do not know the right way to overcome their poor performance problem.
From the article “A Case Study of Academic Performance of Off-Campus
Engineering Students in a Malaysian University” by Norhayati Ahmad, Kartini Salam,
Rosnani Yahya, and Norlida Buniyamin. They said that an average of student intake at
25 students per semester, the average percentage of graduating students per semester is
only about 50% per semester. The data over a period of ten semesters showed that
students who graduated with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of more than
3.00 are averaged at 20%. Majority of the students obtained CGPA between 2.50 to
2.90.
From the article “Influence Factors in Academic Performance among
Electronics Engineering Student: Geographic Background, Mathematics Grade and
Psychographic Characteristics” by Tuan Norjihan Tuan Yaakub, Wan Rosmaria Wan
Ahmad, Yusnira Husaini, and Norhafizah Burham. Based on the collected data, The
data shows that majority of the respondents performed at second class upper level;
CGPA ranging from 3.0 – 3.49 with the percentage of 37.8 %. While another 31.7 %
respondent has obtained first class level with CGPA above 3.5. It is also recorded that
only 7.3 % of the respondent has scored CGPA 2.0 – 2.19 or achieved the third-class
level.
This study is hopefully can identify any factors of poor academic performance
and perceive this situation and finally offer the solutions that could assist the students
to improve their academic performance in the future.
METHODOLOGY
Research methodology is a specific procedures or techniques used to identify,
select, process, and analyze information about a topic. In our research, we plan to start
with an article as main sources. We would study through articles or journals to
understand briefly about the cause of student poor performances and some data about
poor academic performance. Rely on case study, then we proceed to follow the case
development and collecting all the information and useful data to be shared in our
research and presentation.
We also plan to conduct a survey using questionnaire among UITM SHAH ALAM
students to know their opinion about student’s poor academic performance and possible
solution to this issue. This quantitative method is the only suitable method during this
MCO, due to limitation of movement. This survey is using Google Form as a platform
to collect data.
Furthermore, this survey included some liker scale questions, provided answer
section and also opinion section. 50 sets of survey will be distributed using Whatsapp
and Telegram to reach respondents. Our target and subject are limited to UiTM SHAH
ALAM students only. We plan to conduct this survey start from 5 May 2020 until 10
May 2020, the responses will be analyzed automatically by Google Form in statistic
data.
We hope this survey would provide us some useful data to be record as
documentation.
