Animal Habitat
In this lesson we will……
learn what is a habitat.
Understand what does a habitat provide an animal with.
know the habitats of different animals.
learn what helps the animal to live in its habitat .
understand how animals are helpful to us.
What is a habitat?
A place where an animal lives is called its habitat.
Just like you have a home to live in, animals
too have their homes.
Habitats of animals
Pond
Some animals like the frog, fish
and ducks live in or near the pond.
A crocodile and a frog can live
both on land and in water.
Do you know what are animals
that live on land as well as in water
called?
1
Trees
Animals like monkeys live on the trees. Many birds have their
homes on the tree. Elephants live under the shade of trees.
Caves
Animals like tigers and lions live in
dens or caves.
Burrows
Rats and rabbits dig holes in the ground to live. These holes
are called burrows. Snakes also live in these holes.
2
Sea
The crab, starfish and sea gull live in or near the sea.
Desert
Camels live in the desert.
Snowy areas
The polar bear lives in very cold places where
there is a lot of snow. Its thick furry coat helps it
to live in the snow.
Hive –The home of honey bees is called a hive.
What does a habitat provide an animal with?
A habitat provides an animal with
food
water
shelter
protection
space to move around
3
Food
Animals stay in places where they get enough food and water.
The lion, tiger and hyena hunt other animals for their food.
Polar bears eat fish which live in the seas.
Animals living on trees eat fruits and tender leaves. Some
may pick at insects on the trunk.
The giraffe, elephant and the deer eat grass, leaves
and plants.
Put on your thinking caps.
What helps a giraffe to eat leaves from tall trees?
Protection
Animals want to be safe from other animals which may eat
them up.
Elephants live in groups or herds and look for food together.
They warn each other of danger. Their habitat is usually a
forest with lots of trees and tall grass.
Deer also live in a herd.
They need a habitat with lots of tall
grass. They can hide in this grass and
also find enough food.

Home assignment
Be a Zoologist ……….
Let us research!
Find out any two features of a camel that help it to live
in the hot sandy desert habitat.
Find out what helps a penguin to feel warm as it lives in
the cold snowy area.
Note down your answers for the above when your teacher
asks you to, on the sheet provided to you by your teacher.

How are animals helpful to us ?
Cows, buffaloes and goats give us milk.
Can you think of three things made from milk?
Hens and ducks give us eggs.
Hens and goats give us meat.
Honey bees give us honey.
The thread given out by silkworms is used for making
silk cloth.
The fur of the sheep is used to make wool.
The skin of animals like cows, buffaloes and goats is
used as leather for making jackets, bags and shoes.
Animals like the ox, horse, donkey, camel and
elephants carry heavy loads for us.
Horses , camels and elephants also take people from
place to place.
Put on your thinking caps.
Animals give us leather to make beautiful things. Is it right
to kill animals for this purpose?
