Jose Maria College: Weekly Learning Plan

This weekly learning plan outlines a mechanics of deformable bodies course being held during summer 2020. The plan reviews fundamental concepts of static equilibrium from prior courses and introduces the principles of simple stress and strain. Over the week, students will learn about different types of stresses and strains through online presentations and activities. Their understanding will be assessed through quizzes, assignments, and problem solving exercises called "plates". The goal is for students to understand mechanical behavior of materials and be able to apply stress concepts to engineering problems.

WEEKLY LEARNING PLAN

Summer 2020

Course: BES 222/ CE 323 Week: 2

Description: Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

Learning Outcome: At the end of the week, the students will be able to review fundamental
concepts of static equilibrium, understand the principle of simple stress and strain, and apply
these concepts in related problems.

I. Preliminaries
Review Review of force reactions from Statics of Rigid Bodies
II. Lesson Development
Presentation of Concepts Topics:
1. Simple Stress
a. Axial Stress
b. Shear Stress
c. Bearing stress
d. Thin-walled Pressure Vessel
2. Simple Strain
a. Simple strain
b. Stress- Strain Diagram

The students will be able to:

1. Determine the concept of stresses, strains, and

displacements in structures and their components due to
the loads acting on them.
2. Understand the mechanical behaviour of materials for
the safe design of all types of structures.
3. Understand the concept of deformation of strain.
4. Apply concept of simple stress by solving related
problems.
Activities
Activity 1 – Sending of lecture materials and references

Activity 2 – Problem Solving

 After every discussion thru messenger, students are

given sample problems or exercise.
Activity 3 – Quiz
 Students will be given quizzes every other day on the
topic of simple stress

Activity 4 – Plate 1

 Students will be asked to solve problems on the four

types of simple stress

III. Summary and Synthesis

In the review of statics of rigid bodies, essential principles of static equilibrium are applied.
These are important application in problems related to stresses of materials.

IV. Assessment
Student’s knowledge, skills, and comprehension will be assessed through:
 Quiz
 Assignment
 Plates
V. Purposive Assignment
To reinforce the students’ understanding, a set of problems on selected topics in statics of
rigid bodies and simple stress will be given as plates.
