Walking through the airport as I listen to the sound of music with my earphones in my
ear, people around me are looking miserable for their flights. I waited in the long and tiring line
at Starbucks to kill time before my flight to Guatemala, while I waited for the lady in front of me
to stop complaining about her warm caramel iced latte. The intercom yelled out our flight was
boarding and everyone was in a fight to get to the front of the line, all to get on the same plane.
We were going to Guatemala to see how my dads family lives and what his life would be like if
he still lived there.
(explain why your there or what is happening between these two paragraphs)
Welcomed, joyful and caring were the villagers as they greeted us into our small home
that we would be living in for week. Sun gleaming through the window waking me up to the
cheerful sounds of children playing in the streets, it was the first day of my life changing
vacation. Walking through the gravel roads through the town, children selling carved sticks and
homemade bracelets. Giving them all the coins I had, a great smile filled their faces.
(About the change… )
Looking up, my 10 year old self with small and frail legs doubted the chance of reaching
the top. A large, active, and intimidating volcano stared at me as the top was calling me to climb
it to reach the beautiful view. With dollar store flip flops on my feet, I thought I could never make
it up the steep rocky climb, but so I began. The bottom of the volcano was a smooth easy path,
one that gave me confidence in reaching the top. The father we climbed the harder it became.
We reached a corner of a cliff, on the right boulders that would bury me alive, it was time to face
my fear of heights because there was no backing down at this point of the climb. With great
bravery we made our way around. Galloping behind us were horses carrying energized tourists
that were not phased by the challenging climb. Jealousy filled me up as I realized that taking a
horse could have made things much easier. Through the rough battle we were able to stop at a
beautiful location. Stopping in a secret location, we were able to view the beautiful ocean.
Racing to beat the sunset, I was determined to reach the top. As we were almost at the top, my
flip flop broke and slowed us down. I snapped the flip flop and backed it into place, although it
was uncomfortable it was my destiny to get to the top. After the hard work and stress
throughout the climb we finally made it to the top. The view was mesmerizing and the fight to
the top was so worth it. THroughout the battles I faced, I never gave up and it brought me great
success.
