Assignment: Reflection

The Magician’s Twin: C.S. Lewis and the Case Against Scientism, leading us discover Lewis’s
warnings about the abuse of science and how it was more and more relevant for us today. It is a
good perspective for both the scientists and for every body who desires to think about the
essential and on-going debate about the suitable position of science in society. Lewis used to be
no longer anti-science; he was anti-scientism, the faith that contemporary science are the only
dependable technique of knowledge. Thus, the book is very essential for Roman Catholic,
Orthodox and Protestant Christians.

Lewis had a healthy recognize for science, a subject that has paved the way for many
advancements and progress. Science can change our world and makes our life more convenient,
but Lewis knew that it ought to be corrupted, and this is what he was warning us about. He knew
some humans would pursue science due to the fact they desired energy and control. Some
examples of this are provided, along with such headlines and quotations as, “Only Science Can
Save us From Climate Catastrophe”; “We will have the strength of the gods”; “Science is my
savior”, or “Forget faith, only science can retailer us now.” As you can see, wondering in the
name of science is dangerous. It can be used for political ends to manipulate a society at large.

Science, basically, is magic that works. The only real difference is that current science has a
rigorous experimental basis. But, all science is indistinguishable from magic. A necessary notion
that’s developed in the documentary comes from Lewis evaluating science with magic and
calling them twins. He does this by figuring out three common characteristics, the capacity to
feature as a religion, encourage a lack of skepticism, and quest for power. Not only that, but few
understand that science can be a substitute or alternative to religion; that it gives a feel of
meaning and fulfillment. Science, then, becomes the savior were nothing is impossible.

Lastly, Lewis understood that there’s ethics in the back of science, and that comes from a
universe that has been designed through God and held together with the aid of the legal
guidelines he created. Lewis questioned how we can rescue science from scientism. He claimed
we need a regenerated science that respects human rights and honors human dignity. That was
true in his day, and for me it’s still true today, thus, we should govern ourselves in the idea that
science is our savior. I am not an anti-science but I am not also agree with the idea of scientism,
because I believed that the beginning of all things, was created by God.
