Microsoft launches £80-a-year
subscription to Office 2013
a
What happened?
Microsoft released the latest version of
Office 2013, unveiling new versions of
programs including Word, Excel and
Outlook, and a new subscription option
For £109.99, you can buy a single
copy of Office Home and Student
‘outright, and use it for as long as you
want, Alternatively, for £79.99 a year,
you can buy a subscription to Office
365, and use the software on five
different PCs. If you are a university
student, the subscription price is £60
{or two devices over four years. You can
also buy one copy of a sinale proaram in
the suite, such as Word or Excel, for £69.
Office 5365's annual subscription marks
a significant change to how Microsoft
sells its software, Normally, you would
buy a PC or laptop with Word, Excel and
the other software preloaded, or
upgrade your computer to get it, Now,
Microsoft is asking customers to
consider paying a monthly subscription
for the lifetime of their machine,
The stanciard boxed copy" ot Office

used on to just one, which means you'll
need to pay £110 for every machine in
your home, Office 585 has licences for

five PCs.
Microsoft has also changed how many
updates it makes. Office Home and
‘Student will receive the standard
security updates, but no more than that.
In contrast, Office 365 will be
continually updated with new features.
How will it affect you?
If you're looking to upgrade to a new
version of Ward, oF Buy a new PC
featuring Office, youll need to decide
how to pay for it. if you have a large
family using several PCs, you should
consider subscribing ta Office 365,
ut If your household has just one
main PC, you may be better off with one
of the free alternatives available, such as
LibreOffice and Google Brive (see our
next issue for expert tips on how to use
these). IFyau're doing little more than
typing the odd document and tracking
personal finances on a spreadsheet, free
software will do the job,
If you do subscribe to Office, bear in
mind that it you dan't renew at the end
(of 12 months, you wor't be able to edit
documents using the software (though
you can with Microsoft's Web Apps)
What do we think?
This is a bold move from Microsoft, but
it seems doomed to fail, Thanks to
tablets and smartphones, apps have
become small, single-purpose
programs, with a tiny price to match,

Ticketmaster kills CAPTCHA tests
CLLR
What happened?
Ticketmaster said it will stop using the
CAPTCHA system, which asks people
to type hard-to-read words and
numbers to contirm that they're a
‘eal person.
The company uses CAPTCHA tests
to stop automated attempts at buying
hundreds of tickets as scon as they go
‘on sale. Many other sites also use it to
prevent bots bypassing security.
Since its introduction in 2000, the
system has infuriated web users
because of how difficult itis to make
‘out the distorted letters
To replace CAPTCHA, Ticketmaster
«will use software from Solve Media
(solvemedia.com) that will ask you to
type well-known phrases or answer
‘multiple-choice questions such as
“which one is a country?
“Ticketmaster has run trials that show
‘people take an average of seven
seconds to use the new system, half
the time required to solve a CAPTCHA
test.
How will it affect you?
Youll spend far less time screaming in
frustration as you browse, We know how
much you hate using CAPTCHAS, so i'l
come as a relief that a major website
such as Ticketmaster will start using @
friendlier system. fit works, proving
you're human willbe far less hassle.
What do we think?
At last! CAPTCHAS are ane of the
internet's biggest pains, and we've often
complained about how widespread they
are, £0 it's wonderful that they might be
on the way out
Recently, deciphering the spidery
scrawl has become almost impossible,
Being able to hear the CAPTCHA has
helped a bit, but we've often had to
hit the refresh button four or five
times to bring up letters we could
‘read. In fact, the only good thing
about CAPTCHA is the imaginative
‘acronym, which stands for Completely
‘Automated Public Turing test to tell
Computars and Humans apart.
We lke the sound of the Solve Media
tests, They ask clever questions that
only humans can answer, without
compromising security: Hopefully the

Internal hard drives
A new hard drive can boost your computer’s speed

I nternal hard drives may al look the same, but
more importantly, o can operating speed.
‘There's only way to find ut how good a hard drive
Is: test how fast it Isat reading and writing files.
‘We've tested 2 selection of internal hard drives,
{ideal for adding to a PC or slotting into a NAS
(networkcattached storage) enclosure.
‘You'll find 478 drives below, 378 and 2TE drives
‘opposite, and 1TB drives ever the page. All the
drives use a SATA connection, except where
stated, so if you're thinking of upgrading, check
your PC's motherboard documentation to find out
‘what type of SATA connection your PC can handle.
‘Only the most recent motherboards can use
drives larger than 2TB, unless they're partitioned
Into 2TB (or smaller) chunks. This means that
although you can stil use the full capacity of a 378
‘and 4TB drive, you may not be able to use it as a
single large drive.
4TB DRIVES
We tested the
Hitachi Deskstar
7ka000 (exe,
£168 from wow

the Western Digital
FO Anse e ea)
‘To test the read and write speeds of each drive, we measured how
long it took to copy a standard set of files to the hard drives. We
‘copied the files directly from our test PC's memory, because
‘computer memory is faster than the fastest hard dive, This meant
that our results reflect the speed of the drive itself, and not some
‘other element in the test PC.
‘Our large-files test transferred a 100MB file 100 times. This
process mimics video streaming, so a drive that scores wel in our
large-file test will make an excellent secondary drive in a PC or in a
NAS drive used as a media server. In the small-les test, the 100MB
is spit into lots of small files of varying sizes. The test shows how
‘well the drive copes with copying things like office documents and
performing system back-ups. The sral-file test is more challenging
‘and drives that do well here can be Usad as @ main drive for running
‘Winciows. Our charts show an average transfer rate in megabytes

Black 4TB Gad, £224 from winw.waeplus.co.uh). The
Hitachi drive was particularly good at transferring large files,
with a transfer speed af 154,8MB/s, lust ahead of the Western
Digital Black. But i wrote small files slowly, which knocked its
average down to 52MB/s, significant slower than the
‘Western Digital drive,
Despite this the Hitachi's price won it the full five stars.
Costing just 4p per GB, we thin it’s excellent value for money,
land worth tolerating a slight cut in performance. The Western
Digital’s 6p per GE might not sound like much more, but it
adds up to £56 extra ona 4TB drive.

spin at 7.200rpm,
This had an Impact on the performance of both drives, The
Green drive was the slowest, with a arge-file transfer speed of
189.2MB/s and a small-file transfor speod of 47.5MB/s.
‘The Red drive was slightly faster, witha large-file speed of
148.3MB/s and small-hle speed of 51.7MB/s.
However, the Green's per-GB price of just over 3p tipped
the balance in its favour. It's ane of the cheapest drives
available per GB, equal fo the 27S Seagate Garracude, but it
performs much better, so we awarded it our Bronze Award.

We tested four drives. The best was the Western Digital
Black 278 Gis, £119 from www.waeplus.co.uk).Itwas the
fastest in the 2TB group at transferring small fils, with an
average transfer rate of 68MB/s. Its large-file speed of
133MB/s was second only to the Western Digital Green 27B
(Gest, £77 from winw.ballicom.co.uk), which managed a
speed of 139.8MB/s. In assessing the results, we particularly
rated good performance in the small-files test because it
indicated better overall Windows performance. Although the
‘Western Digital Black 27B's 6p-per-GB price made it one of
the more expensive drives in our test, it comes with a five-year
warranty, so we've given it our Silver Award.
‘The Western Digital Green is a great budget option, at
under 4p per GB. It has a slower spin speed than the Black,
which explains its slower small-files test results (47MB/s), but
for the price, t's a great drive to use for streaming over
network or as a secondary drive next to an SSD (solid-state
drive).
The Seagate Barracuda 278 (xx 27%, £68 from www
{ccloniine.com) is very affordable at just over 3p per GB, and
‘matched the Western Digital Black 27B in the large-filas test,
but it was the slowest of the 272 drives at transterring small
files, The Seagate Constellation ES 2TB (# rir, £166 from
wwy/scan.co.uk) was a reasonable performer but was let
down by its Sp-per-GB price. If

Sky Go Extra
Sky’s new download service could transform how you watch movies
and programmes when you're away from your TV set. Daniel Booth
explains how it works
Qversr
‘A new subscription service that lets
‘Sky customers dovnload unlimited
flims and TV programmes from Sky
channels to watch atte an laptops,
phones and tablets. This means you
won't need to be connected to Wi-Fi, 36

1S THIS DIFFERENT TO THE
EXISTING SKY GO SERVICE?
Yes. Sky Go - available on Android

42.7 February 2013

‘and on-demand shows via a Wi-Fi
connection from TV channels they
subscribe to It's free, unlike Sky Go Extra,
You have to pay for the added benefit of
being able to download to watch ottine,
but you can download aifferent content

Q HOW MucH DoEs Ir cost?
£5 a month, on top of your existing
Sky TV package, to download
content from TV channels that you
subscribe to. So if Sky Movies isnt part of
your TV subscription package, you won't
be able to download films shown on that
‘channel through Sky Go Extra,
WHICH CHANNELS DO YOU
GET WITH SKY GO EXTRA?
Not as many as are available on Sky
Go. Currently, you can watch the
following on Sky Go Extra: Sky 1, Sky
Atlant, Sky Living, Sky Arts, Cartoon
Network. Boomerang, Nickelodeon,
Disney XD, Disney Channel, Disney Junior,
Nick Jr and Cartoorite. On Sky Go you
‘can also watch Sky Sports, Sky News,
ESPN, British Eurosport and Fox.
CAN YOU DOWNLOAD.
EVERY SHOW?
No, although many of them are, as
Jong as they've been recently
seraened on TV. In this regard, Sky Go
Extra is more a ‘download to catch up’
service than a vast TV archiva.
It's important to realise that Sky
doesn't have the rights to offer every
show through Sky Go, with the biggest
omission being The Simpsons. Sky is
upfront about this online bit y/
skyblackoutS1D, even telling you which
programmes are ‘blacked out’ each week
When we checked, these included the TV
shows ER and CSI, and the movies Play
Misty for Me, Swingers and Serpico, as
woll as Springfield's famous yellow family
You'l also find that several programs are
only available to stream via Wi-Fi, rather
than to download and watch offline.
TV shows broadcast live can't be
downloaded. For example, you won't be
able to download a full football match
that’s sereened live one evening, to watch
offline the following morning,

you've downloaded,
‘Once You press play, you only have 48

removed.
Qy!s THERE A FREE TRIAL?
Yes. If you're a Sky customer, you
can try the service for free For two
months, Be careful, though. If you fail to
tell Sky that you don't want to continue
using Sky Go Extra after the free trial
ppariod ends, you'll be automatically
signed up and start paying €5 a month.
To make things even trickier, you have
to give Sky 31 days notice that you want
to cancel - evan during the frae trial
period.
So if you definitely know that you don't
‘want to pay for the service, make a date
in your calendar to cancel 29 days after
starting the frae trial. You can cancel by
ringing Sky on 08442 41 414

It's not available on that. either Nor

In other words, Sky doesn’t want to
hold itself to ransom by generating
anticipation for a device, only to let
people down when it deosn't ative as
quickly as expected.
WHY DOESN'T IT SUPPORT
ALL ANDROID DEVICES?
Sky says It's because it takes
“considerable time” to build and
test the app for different versions of
Android, and different devices that run t.
That's a reasonable excuse, but it doesn't
‘explain why TOin devices have been

It depends on your device. On a

Find the strongest Wi-Fi signal
There are numerous free apps that claim

Why it's annoying:
When you delete a file or folder in
Windows, either by right-clicking it and
choosing Delete or selecting it and
pressing the Delete button, you're
‘asked: "Are you sure you want to move
this file to the Recycle Bin?” If you're

this request for confirmation can soon
become tiresome. Happily it no longer

Why it’s annoying:
Every time a program tries to change a
setting on your computer, User Account
Control (UAC) pops up the message: "A
program needs your permission to
Continue”. Microsoft toned dawn the

nagging in Vista can drive you mad.

Why it’s annoying:
Unlike mast browsers, whieh can be
easily uninstalled through the Control

difficult to get rid of internet Explorer. if
you're a devoted Chrome and/or Firefox

having IE on your PC but, unfortunately,
you're stuck with it.
How to turn it off:
You can disable and hide internet

it reappear by ticking the box and

“Uninstall an update’ list until you find
the internet Explorer entry, Right-click It

It's very easy to accidentally knock the
