Barangay Puro was originally several sitios that became known as Barrio San Ramon. It was bounded by other barangays and the Albay Gulf. Only the sitios were inhabited originally, as the area now known as Centro Puro was underwater. As the sea receded in the 1940s, people began living along the shoreline in an area called "Sa Ibong kan Puro", referring to a small island at the mouth of a river. The population grew as more land was exposed. Barrio San Ramon was later renamed Barrio Puro, and in the 1970s it became known as Barangay 59, now covering the whole former area of Barrio

HISTORY OF PURO
Barangay No. 59-Puro
Legaspi City

Before Barangay Puro was officially known as Barrio San Ramon, composed of Sitio
Malindang, San Isidro (Malandog) Sitio Guinapahan and Lamba.
This was bounded on the North by Barangay Buraquis (then a Sitio of Dap-Dap) Taysan
on the west and Maslog on the Southern part. The east by Albay Gulf.
Officers were filled as Tiniente del Barrio and Consehals. These officers were sometimes
appointed by mayor.
Only the Sitios were inhabited in the early days of barrio San Ramon, because what is
now Centro Puro was completely underwater. It was only sometime in the late 1940’s that
people started to build homes along the shorelines and the place was called “Sa Ibong kan
Puro” reffering to an islet at the mouth if the river.
As the sea continues to recede and land expanded due to see movement, population
grows with it. Until later the place was no longer referred as the other side of the islet Puro but
named Puro. There is no record when barrio San Ramon was officially renamed as Barrio Puro.
But the area that comprised Barrio San Ramon became the whole of Barrio Puro.
Then Sometimes in 1970’s all barrio’s of the Philippines were officially named as
Barangays. And barrio Puro became Barangay 63 and now 59, of Legaspi City. It’s officers are
now the Punong Barangay instead of Barrio Captain and Barangay Kagawad.

most leading illness in Barangay Puro is fever with the percentage of 41%. Followed by, cold
which ranked 2 with 38% and cough with the percentage of 17. 6%. Next are other cases such
as vomiting, stomache were in rank 4 with 11.8% followed by, asthma with the percentage of
5.88%. Having a percentage of 2.9% as rank 5 are heart attack, pneumonia, LBM, sore eyes, and
measles.
