SUBJECT: PREVENTION OF SUBSTANCE USE AND ABUSE


GRADE LEVEL: GRADE IX

Subject Description:
Drugs are very helpful and useful when used properly. They save lives and prolong it but if misused, could result to disastrous consequences.
In this Unit , the drug scenario in the Philippines, factors that influence substance use and abuse, substances of abuse, the harmful effects of drugs in the body, and the prevention and control of
substance use and abuse are tackled and discussed.

Student Learning Outcomes:

 Describe the drug scenario in the Philippines


 Explain the concept of substance use, misuse, abuse and independence
 Identify and describe types of drugs/ substances for abuse
 Discuss the harmful effects of substance use and abuse on the individual, family, school and community.
 Enumerate ways to prevent and control substance use and abuse

Culminating Product or Evidence of Outcomes:


You are the chairman of the Barangay Youth Council. The barangay captain commissioned you to carry out a project on prevention and control of drug abuse in your community. The project
involves planning and implementing worthwhile recreational activities for the youth, pocket seminars, to disseminate information about the adverse effects of drugs, and a series counselling
sessions that will help build self-esteem and develop skills in resisting peer pressure. Your target participants are the adolescents in your community whose age range from 10-19 years old. As the
chairman, you will divide and delegate your council members into four groups who will be in charge of planning for and presenting through a short role play of the following: ( 1 ) Recreational
activities for boys; (2) Recreational activities for girls; (3) Pocket seminar; and (4) Counselling activities.
GOAL: To perform an activity that shows responsibility with community members through participation in collective action to prevent and control substance use and abuse.
ROLE: You are the chairman of the Barangay Youth Council
AUDIENCE: You invited your classmates to conduct buzz session and sharing views and opinions about prevention of substance and use.
SITUATION: Role playing showing the different recreational and some counselling activities to help build self-esteem and develop skills in resisting peer pressure.
PRODUCT: The students will independently use their understanding of the concepts of drugs or substances that are commonly abused, harmful effects of drugs on the body, and the prevention of
substance use and abuse, so that in the long run, they will be able to apply the skills of resisting peer pressure to use drugs in various situations, deal with problems when they come, face the
reality, take the challenges of life while finding the solution, and make correct decisions that will result in a peaceful, happy, and harmonious environment, a good and healthy living, and a better
future.
STANDARDS: The performance must be planned relating to the topic and cooperation from the group will be expected. The performance will be rated based on the following rubric.
