Four-Day Work Week: Pros and Cons

The document summarizes opposing views on a four-day work week policy. It discusses two main points of view. First, an article argues that a four-day week would benefit both employers and employees by reducing stress for the same pay. However, a lecture counters that employers would incur extra costs to hire more people to fill the gap of the lost day. Second, the article claims the policy would improve workers' quality of life through reduced hours and more free time. But the lecture suggests it could instead increase stress by raising productivity expectations or hinder career advancement for those who prefer the four-day schedule. Four Hour Work

Manuel Luarte

The reading passage suggests that four day work policy on companies could benefit both the

employer and the employee, While the lecture refutes that statement showing that it might cause

some unpleasant consequences.

First, the article states that the company who allow their workers to have a four day week work

will have less overworked and stressed employees for the same money. Because they have a

proportional payment for their work time. The lecture disagrees because the company will have

to spend extra money in health and training of the extra people who will need to hire to fill the

gap of a day with no work. Related to that, more people working will need more space and

equipment.

Second, the reading mentions that the quality of life of workers will be better caused by the less

amount of work load and more free time for their own. However, the lecture suggests that this

could not be the case at all, because employers might rise the expectation of the worker

productivity causing more stressed environment. In addition, workers who prefer four day week

work could have a worse quality of life due to unstability and less consideration to promotions.

In conclusion, the reading support the four day work because of the economic benefit and the

improvement of employees quality of life. Meanwhile the lecture disagree with the article

showing the downside of four day work week, presenting reasons of economic disadvantages and

problems that a measure like that one could have.
