Start By:

A. Remove the main drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Main Drive Shaft -
Remove and Install".
B. Remove the drawbar. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drawbar - Remove and Install".
C. Remove the axles. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove".

D. Remove the power train oil filter and the base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oil
Filter and Base (Power Train) - Remove".
E. Remove the primary fuel filter, the water separator, and the base. Refer to Disassembly and
Assembly, "Primary Fuel Filter, Water Separator and Base - Remove and Install".

Note: SERVICE DATA: TOOLING (ZZ) WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN

PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE REMOVAL PROCEDURE. THIS TOOLING IS SHOWN TO
ASSIST THE EXPERIENCED SERVICEMAN.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool

Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for
installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this
helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

1. If equipped, lower the ripper to the ground. Remove the ripper shanks or invert the ripper
shanks.

2. Drain the power train oil system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to
Operation and Maintenance, "Transmission Oil - Change". The capacity of the power train
oil system is 144 L (38 US gal).

3. Separate the planetary from the differential. Use the Tooling for removing the axle.

4. Insert Tooling (F) into the left final drive by approximately 940 mm (37.0 inch). Rotate
Tooling (F) for 180 degrees. Pull Tooling (F) outward in order to move the sliding carrier
off the bevel gear shaft. Rotate Tooling (F) for 180 degrees and remove Tooling (F) .

5. Disconnect harness assembly (1) .

6. Remove nut (2) . Push connector (3) through cover (4) .

7. Remove bolts (5) .

8. Remove covers (6) and (7) .

9. Remove bolts (8) .

10. Install Tooling (A) . Tighten Tooling (A) evenly in order to remove carrier (9) . Remove the
O-ring seal from carrier (9) .

11. Remove O-ring seals (10) and (11) .

12. Remove bolts (12) and cover (13) .

13. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to the transmission. Apply a slight lifting
force.

14. Remove hose assembly (14) , bracket (15) and bolts (16) .

15. Install Tooling (C) . Remove handle (17) . Tighten Tooling (C) evenly in order to separate
transmission and bevel gear (18) from the main frame.

16. Pull transmission and bevel gear (18) away from the case and frame until rollers (19) are to
the end of rail assembly (20) .

17. Position Tooling (D) under the rear end of transmission and bevel gear (18) . Remove the
suitable lifting device from Tooling (B) .

18. Remove bolts (21) and handle (22) .

19. Install Tooling (E) and a suitable lifting device to the bevel gear housing.

20. Remove transmission and bevel gear (18) . Insert a prybar into Tooling (B) in order to
balance the load of transmission and bevel gear (18) . The weight of transmission and bevel
gear (18) is approximately 590 kg (1300 lb).
