Grade 6: Journey from Fibre to Fabric

The document discusses the origins and production of cloth and fabric. It provides a timeline showing that early humans used animal skins, fur, leaves and grass for clothing over 100,000 years ago. By 40,000 years ago, sewing needles made of bone indicated the use of leather and fur garments as well as cotton, wool and silk. The modern production of fabric developed with the invention of the sewing machine in the 19th century allowing for readymade clothes and the large-scale production of fabric. Synthetic fibers were also created in the 20th century. The document then explains that fibers are twisted together to form yarn which is used to create fabric through processes like spinning, knitting and weaving.

Independence.

Process of making garments by interlocking loops of wool

Need two long needles and long yarn of wool

Two distinct set of yarns are interlocked at right angles to form a fabric it is called weaving.
If electricity operated it is called power loom
If hand operated called Handloom
