Why we Dance
In every culture and every century, we have danced. There isn't a time or place where
people didn't dance. Dance is something that we have carried for centuries. Why is this? Dance
doesn't serve any survival purposes. If anything it is a waste of valuable time and energy. Why is
it that we used so much time and energy on dance, and still do?
When dance was first introduced it was used for mainly religious and cultural purposes.
People would dance to communicate with God's and ancestors, to heal, and to summon power.
This makes sense when looking back, but what about today? What do we still continue to dance?
Everyone has a longing to fit in, to be part of something bigger than themselves. This is
why we chant as crowds, march in protest, and join teams. These gatherings and collective action
bring a sense of togetherness that we all long for. Dance has a similar effect. When jumping,
twisting, and kicking in a crowd it provides the joy of being a part of something.
People often dance as a way to express themselves. Dance is unique in its capacity to
convey a message. It's not confined to only words like writing is. They say a picture says a
thousand words. Dance is a moving picture, it creates hundreds of little moments, each moment
creating its own message. Just one dance can tell millions of words. I think this is why we as a
society love to dance.

Dance is a method for people to show their feelings and emotions in a way they know
best. Dance provides many outlets to express their emotions. Their emotions let out are shown
through body movement and facial expressions. You can compare dancing to writing. Writers
use punctuation to enhance their stories. In the same way, dancers use tempo, facials, and
different forms of dance to add depth and emotion to their dance. Dance, with its ability to
express emotion, is often used at events. It is used to bring joy at things such as parties or any
type of social gatherings. Dance can also be used to bring attention to sad things, such as cancer
or abuse.
Dance is special because of its power, it has power to break down barriers, bring people
together, and create something new. We can see this in America. For centuries America has been
a gathering place. People have come here from every country in the world. This diversity gives
us a rich and unique culture. America’s culture is unique because it is “the great mixing pot” of
the world. It takes different cultures, places them together, and creates something unique and
beautiful. You can see this mix of culture in a range of different things. You can find it in music,
food, clothes, and of course, dance. In the early stages of American history, African Americans
struggled to fit into the American culture. They were seen as nothing more than property. This
started to change as they joined the dance and music community. They slowly were given the
opportunity to share their talents. It was many years before they were fully accepted into the
community, but dance did provide a push for acceptance.
We love to dance. We love it because it helps bring us together as nothing else can. It
helps us reach out and to help us become part of something greater. We have done it from the
beginning of time, and we will continue until the end.
