KUD
Students will KNOW: How to utilize Google Earth, organize information on a graphic organizer, compare maps, label
maps, what latitude and longitude is, what time zones are, and they will know how to describe geographic features.
Students will UNDERSTAND THAT: “The term time zone can be used to describe several different things, but mostly it
refers to the local time of a region or a country.” (Buckle, 2020).
Students will DO: Students will watch a video talking about time zone, we will then do a bell warmer, activity, and
then conclude with in class discussion and a homework sheet.

Bell warmer: What are three things a map must have on it?
Answers can vary but can include the following: A title, scale, compass rose, a key, etc.
Formative Assessment: Activity: In this activity we will first talk about Google Earth, we will watch this video:

Students will then have the opportunity to surf Google Earth and map interesting things they see, mountains, hills,
streets, etc. Whatever interests them. We will then talk about time zones, what they are, how to find out what time
zone we are in, and then some history about time zones. We can also then compare and contrast Google Earth to a

regular map.
Summative Assessment: Exit slip and discussion
• Open class discussion about what we just learned
Exit slip: What did you learn about geography and Google Earth?
Another example for an exit slip: The equator is a pretend imaginary line that we say runs ____________.

Materials:
• Google Earth
• A regular map
• Compare & Contrast Graphic Organizer
• If individual tablets are not available, then we can use the SMART BOARD
Lesson Plan:
• In this lesson, various standards will be broached. We will utilize Google Earth, Google accounts, Google Docs if the
C&C graphic organizer is not printed. Students will have the ability to use any prior knowledge they may have to
incorporate it into this lesson on using Google Earth, a digital map. We will have classroom discussions and students will
take notes, and remark on things they find interesting to them.
Lesson Closure(s):
• Overall, students should successfully take away several new ideas and knowledge from this lesson and can work a
digital map and successfully use it as they would a paper printed map.
Formative Assessment:
• Comparing & Contrasting Graphic Organizer, exit slip, & students can submit two facts they learned from the
videos shown that they did not know before
Extended Learning (Homework)
• See Times Zones Crossword Puzzle pdf, all students will get a copy, it will be worth 10/10 homework points if
attempted, will discuss in class for correct answers.
