Tornadic waterspouts can also form over water and they have characteristics similar to land
tornadoes. They form in association with the development of cumulonimbus clouds and are often
accompanied by high winds, lightning and even hail. These types have the potential to form on
land and move unto water or form on water and move on to land; and once on land they can be
quite dangerous.
Waterspouts have been known to have an impact on marine ecosystems as well. Depending on
the intensity of the wind in the waterspout marine organisms like fish, turtles and even coral
within 1 meter on the surface of the water in the waterspout can be lifted out of the water.
Waterspouts can be very dangerous and have to potential to overturn boats, cause intense
damage to ships and pose a significant threat to low flying aircrafts. They should be avoided and
persons should never attempt to navigate through a waterspout but maintain a considerable
distance away from it.
