Business Continuity Management Systems

ISO 22301:2019 Business Continuity Management
Natural disasters, fires, supply chain issues or cyber-attacks are
just some of the many unexpected yet possible threats to the
smooth running of any business. Consistent and robust business
continuity planning for what to do when disaster strikes is the
best defence.

Uncertainty has never been more certain, and business disruption

is a key area of concern for most executives, but, managed well,
the benefits and opportunities are many. Having effective
business continuity plans and capabilities in place is key to
restoring operations if anything goes awry.

ISO 22301, Security and resilience – Business continuity

management systems – Requirements, is the world’s first
International Standard for implementing and maintaining an
effective business continuity plan. It enables an organization to
have a more effective response and a quicker recovery, thereby reducing any impact on people,
products and the organization’s bottom line.

ISO 22301:2019, Security and resilience – Business continuity management systems –

Requirements, is a management system standard published by International Organization for
Standardization that specifies requirements to plan, establish, implement, operate, monitor,
review, maintain and continually improve a documented management system to protect against,
reduce the likelihood of occurrence, prepare for, respond to, and recover from disruptive
incidents when they arise. It is intended to be applicable to all organizations, or parts thereof,
regardless of type, size and nature of the organization.

This standard was originally developed by ISO technical committee ISO/TC 223 on societal
security and published for the first time in May 2012. ISO 22301:2012 was the first published
ISO standard that had fully adopted the new format for writing management system standards
described in Annex L. ISO/TC 292 Security and resilience took over the responsibility of the
work when ISO/TC 223 was dissolved and initiated a revision of the standard. The 2nd edition
was published on 31 October, 2019, essentially consisting in refactoring the text of the standard
to avoid repetitions.

What are the benefits of ISO/IEC 27001 Information
Security Management?
ISO 22301 brings together international best practice
to help organizations respond to, and recover from,
disruptions effectively. This means reduced costs and
less impact on business performance should
something go wrong. What’s more, companies with
multiple sites or divisions can rely on the same
consistent approach throughout the entire
organization.

Other benefits include:

• The ability to reassure clients, suppliers, regulators and other stakeholders that the organization has
sound systems and processes in place for business continuity
• Improved business performance and organizational resilience
• A better understanding of the business through analysis of critical issues and areas of vulnerability

ISO 22301 also gives a clear and detailed view of how an organization operates, offering valuable
insights that are useful for strategic planning, risk management, supply chain management, business
transformation and resource management.
