Project Guidelines: Telling A Story

The project aims to have students practice using simple past tense. Students will be put into groups of 3-4 and be given a table with categories to inspire their story, like country and occupation. They will then use at least half the words from the table to tell their story. Students will get feedback and be graded both as a group and individually based on their participation and performance.

PROJECT GUIDELINES

Class: COMM3 Level: A2.1 Project 1: TELLING A STORY

Aims of Project:
+ To get students to orally create a short story in small groups
+ To utilize the language they have learned during the course, especially simple past
Time required: 2 hours – 10 minutes for one group
+ Game ‘Stop the bus’: 15 minutes
+ Preparation: 30 minutes
+ Telling a story: 8-10 minutes/ group
Procedure:
Preparation: (pls. see Course Outlines of COMM 3 for the day to inform students about the Project
Guidelines)

Lecturers:
1. Inform students about the project, what they have to do and how they are graded.
2. Put students into small groups of 3 or 4.
3. Draw on the board a table like the ones below and get each team to copy it onto a piece of paper.
4. Students simply have to think of one item to go in each category beginning with the set letter.
5. Give an example line of answers for the first time you play with a new group. The first team to
finish shouts “Stop the Bus!”.
6. Check their answers and write them up on the board and if they are all okay that team wins a
point. If there are any mistakes in their words, let the game continue for another few minutes.
7. If it gets too difficult with certain letters, reduce the number of words they have to get. You can
say. “Ok. For this round you can Stop the Bus with 4 or 5 columns”.
8. Tell the students they are going to create a story, using at least half of the total words (i.e.. 15/30
words).
Example: In Brazil, there is a famous baker. Every morning, he goes to the market to buy
beautiful, fresh flowers for his bakery…
9. Give feedback after each group tells their story.
10. Cast students’ votes for the best story.
