Measuring Area
Mathematics, level: 3-5
Subject: Math Teacher: Mariam Santina
Topic: Area Grade level: Fourth grade
Duration: 26 minutes                             Date: 19-11-2016
Materials required: pencil, graph paper, ruler
Concepts Taught: Areas with specific units
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
Pave a domain (given a pave as a unit of measure).
Express the area of a surface in an ordinary unit.
Draw a Square and a Rectangle with a given area.
Introduction: (4min)
The teacher starts the lesson by telling the student a story.
The story is:
A farmer has two fields. He wants to know which of the two fields he can
harvest more wheat, the farmer needs your help to know which of the two
fields he will crop more? Why?
Activities:
Activity 1: (7 min)
Objective: Pave a domain.
Materials: Papers, Small shapes cards to use it like a unit.
Procedures:
 Give the instructions before start.
o Give each group the same shape but with different units to measure
    its area:
Group 1: shape with squares to use it as a unit.
Group 2: shape with rectangle to use it as a unit
Group 3: shape with triangle as a unit.
o They will conclude that the filling is the area. Using the inductive
method they will move from the specific point pave a domain to the
general point to count the unit in order to find the area.
o They will conclude that when we want to measure an area for a
shape we will use specific unit.
Activity2: 6 min
Objectives: Express the area of a surface in an ordinary unit.
Materials: Papers with some surfaces distributed from the teacher to the
students.
Procedures:
 Give the instructions before start.
Give students grid paper with a surface.
Ask them to find the area of the surfaces by using the square (the
square that represent 1 unit).
Activity 3: 6min
Objective: draw square and rectangle with respect to a given area.
Materials: pencil, ruler, and graph paper.
Procedure: give students graph paper and ask them to draw a square or a
rectangle with respect to the given area.
Closure: 3min
Summarize what we did today in our session.
Solve the assessment sheet to check if students get the idea of the
    lesson.
