1. Write down the stated term and the nth term of the following arithmetic
sequences
a. 7, 11, 15, … (7th) c. 18, 11, 4, … (6th )
b. -7, -5, -3, … (23rd) d. 3, 3 ½, 4, … (16th)

2. Find the sum of the following series. (hint: use the formula for arithmetic
sequences first to find n)
a. 5, 9, 13, …, 101 c. 83, 80, 77, …, 5
b. -17, -12, -7,…, 33 d. 1, 1 ¼ , 1 ½, … 9 ¾

3. The sum of the first 20 terms of an arithmetic sequence is 840. If the


common difference is 4, find
(a)The first term
(b) The sum of the first 30 terms.

4. You buy a TV and agree to pay as follows: RM150 for the first month,
RM140 for the second month, RM130 for the third month and so on for 15
months.
(a)What is the 15th payment?
(b) What is the total payment for the purchase?

5. Determine whether each sequence is geometric. If so, find the common


ratio.

6. Find the next two terms of each geometric sequence.

7. To settle the purchase of a house, Julian has to pay a down payment of
RM10000 plus RM2000 at the end of the first month, RM1900 at the end of
the second month, RM1800 at the end of the third month and so on for 20
months. What is the total payment?

8. A recovering heart attack patient is told to get on a regular walking


program. The patient is told to walk a distance of 5 km the first week, 8 km
the second week, 11 km the third week and so on for a period of 10 weeks.
At that point the patient is to maintain the distance walked during the 10 th
week. How far will the patient walk during the 10th week?
a. Is the sequence arithmetic or geometric? Explain your answer.
b. How far will the patient walk during the 10th week? Show all work.

9. You have won a contest sponsored by a local radio station. If you are
given the choice of the two payment plans listed below, which plan
will pay you more?
a) $1 on the first day, $2 on the second day, $3 on the third day, etc., for
two weeks.
b) $0.01 on the first day, $0.02 on the second day, $0.04 on the third day,
etc. for two weeks.
10. Find the indicated sum of each geometric series.
