Genre analysis

Introduction

Genre analysis is concerned with the nature of linguistic conventions and

how they operate within different types of 'texts' (such as, political
speeches, journal articles, business letters) that are referred to as 'genre'.

Genre analysis explores both the structure and communicative purpose of

genre and the way these texts function in the groups of people who use
them, including how use confers membership of a genre community.

Genre analysis, thus, take a particular notion of genre as the basis for
analysis, which is explored in more detail in

Genre analysis:- is an area of discourse analysis that studies written and

spoken discourse, mainly in nonliterary communication and especially in
domain‐specific communication (academic, corporate, legal), approaching
it in terms of genres, that is, “types” or “kinds” of discourse. The article
looks at the main traditions in genre analysis, discussing the most
important concepts in each of them. It then examines evolutions of genre
.analysis over time, including those ensuing from the spread of new media

A genre is any stylistic category in literature that follows specific

conventions. Examples of genre in literature include historical fiction, satire,
zombie romantic comedies (zom-rom-com), and so on. Many stories fit into
more than one genre. Genre Analysis is the study of situated linguistic
behaviour in institutionalised academic or professional settings, whichever
way one may look at it ; whether in

There are various ideas of what genre analysis should do. One view is that
genre analysis identifies typical patterns of speaking practice and
investigates their systematic relation to aspects of the social structure. This
idea is rather more structuralist than a similar but conservative view that
suggests genre analysis identifies how linguistic features are chosen by
expert users of the genre such that it accomplishes their communicative
purpose and, further, explains the social and psychological context of these
choices. Whereas the first notion sees genre analysis foregrounding social
.determinants, the second emphasises the primacy of the genre community

genre analysis emphasizes the psychological process of the text

construction. Through the presentation and analysis of the regular
organization together with other linguistic features of a text, genre analysis
offers a deeper explanation of relationship between the form and the
function.
Other suggestions focus on the narrow methodic practices and identify the
aim of genre analysis as the identification of the moves and strategies of a
genre and the allowable order of the moves .In similar vein, it is suggested
that the aim of genre analysis is to investigate the social and linguistic
conventions associated with a particular genre.

Often the aims of genre analysis are specified in relation to particular

concerns such as teaching the structure and variations of a genre to show
that most understandable writing is based on some set of conventions

Example

When listening to a song, rarely does the listener closely analyze the lyrics to
figure out what the song is about. Similar to poetry, song lyrics are written in a
fashion that purposefully says what the artist wants in an indirect way. Other
genres though, may have a different approach to saying what they mean. For
example, a post from The Positivity Blog, by Henrik Edberg, titled “How to Stop
Worrying: 9 Simple Habits,” is a straightforward list addressing how to be more
positive. On the other hand, the song “Fooling Yourself” by Styx (lyrics by lead
singer Tommy Shaw), also conveys a message of looking at life in a positive
fashion, but the meaning within the lyrics is much harder to find and is written in a
different style because of the genre it is in. The song and the blog post are intended
to send a message about living life in a positive way, but their methods of
conveying this message differ because of the genres’ differences in audience and
purpose
The song “Fooling Yourself” by Styx is geared towards adults who listen to 80’s
rock music mostly for the purpose of entertainment. Tommy Shaw’s lyrics in
“Fooling Yourself” are written in a style that fits the music. The syllables of the
words fit into the musical meter and the lyrics include interesting vocabulary that
rolls off the tongue and is appealing to a listener. His purpose though, remains, to
send a message to enjoy life and not be worrisome and cynical. Shaw originally

wrote the lyrics as a message to his bandmate Dennis DeYoung who was often
miserable while touring, but later Shaw realized it could also apply to himself and
that he needed to take his own advice. The negative attitude that DeYoung and
Shaw both went through is common for many folks, so the lyrics in the song can be
very moving to them. Being that this text is written for musical purposes also
.means that the style is going to be different than that of the blog post
