Stephen Forgacs as a first

turner in 1950
S t r o n g L e a d e rs h i p
Forgacs had its genesis in 1950 when owner and Managing Director Stephen Forgacs started as a 15 year old
fitter and turner apprentice in Ganz Wagon Budapest.
Stephen arrived in Australia in 1957 as a young immigrant, fleeing the Soviet invasion of Hungary, speaking little
English. Fresh from Europe, through sheer will and extraordinary effort he built a marine and heavy engineering
Company that is today unmatched in Australia for breadth of facilities.
Forgacs Engineering has had pivotal roles in major infrastructure projects:
• Boyne (Gladstone), Tomago (Newcastle) & Hydro (Kurri Kurri) Aluminium Smelters
• BHP Air Purification Plant Port Kembla Steelworks
• Sydney Centrepoint Tower
• Lane Cove Rail Tunnel Sydney
• SEAFARIS , 42m catamaran – 2007 World Best Super-yacht Venice
• Wisemans Car Ferry
• Electrification of Sydney-Newcastle Rail Link
• Barque Endeavour replica
Stephen’s early years as a tradesman led to a lifelong commitment to
Forgacs people. Today more than 90 apprentices are indentured at
Forgacs with each given individual training. Forgacs is also part of
a pilot project to introduce secondary school students to careers
in marine defence and advanced manufacturing.
