WIDE SCREEN PROJECTION
SUPE RAPRIA
BY PANAVTSTON INC HOLLY WOOD
What is SUPERAMA “16”?
It is @ dual-purpose anamorphic lens, designed for both the taking and projection of regular 16mm motion
pictures. When a picture is being taken with the Superama, an image fwice as wide as normal is “squeezed”
‘onto the conventional size film. (This is referred to as an “anamorphic power of two.") Then, when the film
is projected through the Superama lens, the image is “unsqueezed” and the ratio of the image width to
image height is 2.66 to 1.0 (instead of the ordinary 1.33 to 1.0). This is actually « little wider than Hollywood-
produced CinemaScope films. Of course, the film is developed in the usual manner.
Is SUPERAMA “16” an actual lens?
Yes! It is @ precision-made cylindrical lens with five elements, all hard coated, of a revolutionary design,
Special high density glass is used for all elements insuring maximum light transmission, high contrast, excellent
chromatic characteristics and superb edge-to-edge defi
Can SUPERAMA “16” be focused?
‘Yes! This is an extremely important feature and makes possible the complete elimination of astigmatism in
taking and projection. A helical focusing mount is calibrated from 5! to infinity and absolute sharpness in the
picture is assured at any distance within this vast range. Compare this with non-focusing anamorphic attach-
ments which can only produce @ reasonably shar
significance of ths feature.
image at a fixed distance and you can appreciate theoe Can SUPERAMA “16” be used with all 16mm prime lenses?
For perfect results, the SUPERAMA should be used with @ camera lens whose focal length is 32mm or longer.
When used with certain standard 25mm (1") comera lenses, slight vignetting will appear in the corners of the
image. Very often, the standard 2” toking lenses supplied with 35 mm still cameras will make excellent cine
lenses for use with the SUPERAMA. In any case, the camera's lens must be of the “helical focusing” type
that is, the front of the lens must not rotate when it is being focused.
e Will SUPERAMA “16” work with all 16mm cameras?
Yes! But since any anamorphic attachment tends to exaggerate defect inherent in the camera's prime lens,
best results are obtained with good equipment. A poor prime lens will not become better by using the
‘Superama "16." For this reason, the advanced amateur, fomiliar with lens quality and characteristics, can be
‘expected to achieve the finest results.
oe How does SUPERAMA “16” attach to the camera?
By means of a simple triple-ring adaptor that permits the SUPERAMA "16" lens to be focused independently
of the prime lens. The adaptor ring which fits over the prime lens of the camera is supplied with an undersize
‘opening which can be bored out to the exact outer diameter of the taking lens by @ camera service shop to
insure @ perfect fit. Ths is @ fast and simple operation that ony competent camera repair service can take
care of for a small service charge. This eliminates the necessity for purchasing extra adaptor rings and step-
Up or step-down rings, and provides the user with an ottachment tailor-made to fit his camera.
6 How is the SUPERAMA “16” positioned for “‘squeeze”’?
The oval shape of the elements is easy to observe when the lens is installed on the camera or projector.
By turning the lens so the oval ical position, the proper "squeeze" is achieved. This can be done
visually in a few seconds.
© Does my exposure change when using SUPERAMA “16"?
In determining exposure for the prime lens when used with the SUPERAMA "16", a '& stop open should be
allowed.
6 What about using filters with the SUPERAMA “16”?
The filter must be placed in front of the SUPERAMA lens in the ordinary manner.
© Does SUPERAMA "16" require special viewfinders?
It all depends on the camera and lens focal length used. If equipped with a sports finder at the top of the
camero, no special viewfinder is required. On Bolex equipment and on Bell & Howell “70” series cameras,
‘an extension bracket can be purchased to move the viewfinder away from the side of the camera to clear
the Superama “16” lens housing. In composing the picture, it must be remembered that the actual area covered
by the lens is twice as wide as the area normally pictured by the viewfinder designed for the taking lens.
‘Asc result, a true CinemaScope type viewfinder could be achieved by using a finder for o lens which is half
the focal length of the taking lens and masking the top and bottom, to give a 2.66 to 1 aspect ratio. Thus, for
‘example, a viewfinder for a 25mm lens, when properly masked at top and bottom, reveals the full 2.66 to 1
field which Superama "16" will put on film when used with @ 50mm (or 2 inch) taking lens.
RADIANT MANUFACTURISUPERAMA “16” used with silent projectors?
When functioning as @ projection ens, the SUPERAMA ‘'16" is easily attached fo the prime lens of any 16mm
silent projector in exactly the some manner as SUPERAMA is attached to the taking lens:of the camera.
{An extra adaptor ring is included with the SUPERAMA "16" when it is purchased for use with o silent pro-
jector. The opening in this ring again is designed to exactly fit over the prime lens of the projector, pro-
viding a quick and simple means for making the SUPERAMA “16” cn integral part of the optical system of
the projector.
® How is SUPERAMA “16” used with sound projectors?
When purchased for use with a sound projector, the SUPERAMA "16" is supplied with a special bracket de~
signed to fit on the case or housing of the projector. In such cases, the user should specify the make of
projector to receive the proper bracket. If more than one make of projector is to be used, the appropriate
extra brackets can be purchased separately.
® Is SUPERAMA “16” easy to “line up" for proper results during projection?
Centering the SUPERAMA “16” in front of the prime lens is taken care of automatically by the adaptor ring
‘on silent machines and the carefully designed bracket on sound machines. The only adjustments required of the
user are (1) to pre-focus the SUPERAMA ‘:16" fo match the projection distance and (2) make sure, by visual
check, that the oval shape of the optical elements is in on up-and-down or vertical postion. If, upon pro-
jecting the picture, you find that the scene is tilted slighty, this can be remedied immediately by a slight turn
(of the lens in its ring or bracket.
@ Are wide Screens available for projecting with SUPERAMA “16"?
Yes! Radiant can supply tripod, wall and frame type Screens in widths ranging from 50” to 20 or over for
wide Seren projection in any aspect ratio. See Radiant's Wide Screen price list for details.
How can I determine the proper Screen size when projecting at a given distance
SUPERAMA “16"?
Remember, the SUPERAMA lens does not change the height of the picture—but it does double the width.
Therefore, if you normally project @ 45” x 60” picture at 28” with o 2” prime lens, the “unsqueezed”
cenamorphic picture will remain 45” high, but the width will expond to 120” (or 10 feet!) See Screen Size
Chart below, for projection at 2.66 1.
